How are you doing today? Good to talk to you the other day. Hope you had a good weekend. It was pretty quiet for us. Had coffee with Nancy Foley this morning, and she is having knee surgery on the 23rd of March on one knee, and the next week she will have surgery on her knee. Funny, it has to do with Medicare. Sometime this fall she will have hip replacement, that will be a lot longer to recup from, but she is will. She has been suffering with siatica and is in a lot of pain right now. Dick is going to Coeur'D'alene on the weekend of the 24th to attend Trixie's Miller memorial. I am going to spend the weekend with John while Connie and Ray go to Spokane. Talked with Marianne, and she is finally getting to the point where she is not feeling so puny and getting her energy back. Continue to have you in my prayers. Blessings! Hope this works, this is a trial. Carol I remember how much fun we had in High School and what we would do to get out of chorus. The funny thing is, we both liked to sing, why did we want to leave last period choir? Because the little man who taught it drove us nuts. The poor little man. Oh well! Carol, you have brought so much joy to my life, back in those old days. We also have a few copies of the memory book Victor published. If you would like a copy of either or both, please let me know. Jane Hawkins <jhawk@oz.net> Seattle, WA - Monday, January 24, 2005 7:11 AM CST I would appreciate, endlessly more than I can say, a copy of any photo of Anna anyone might be willing to go to the trouble of either mailing me, or scanning and e-mailing. You have all been recurring in my thoughts and prayers over these past few weeks. Jane, thank you for keeping in touch, since I have not been very involved in many fannish gatherings of late, and sometimes the Internet is a small and rickety place. I am grateful for having known Anna, who has been a calming influence for many people. Occasionally when I'm at a traffic signal or merging onto the freeway, I think of you. Timing is everything, and there is a time for every purpose under heaven. Yes, Anna, you will be missed. I shall donate in your name. Yvonne V. My sympathies to all who were close to her. Jessica Salmonson <haunted@violetbooks.com> - Sunday, January 9, 2005 7:47 PM CST I'm just stunned. I hadn't seen Anna in a very long time, but we tended to chat when we ran into each other (was 1990 really the last time I ever saw her?). Thanks to all of you who helped her out over the last few months. Laurie Mann Pittsburgh, PA USA - Sunday, January 9, 2005 4:10 PM CST I'm very sorry for your loss and grief. I only met Anna a couple of times but enjoyed her company very much. Kai Jones (formerly Kris Hasson-Jones) <snippy@pacifier.com> Portland, OR - Sunday, January 9, 2005 3:42 PM CST A further thought occurred to me that I'd like to record here: I have not been very much in touch with Anna or fans in Seattle in general for a while. I didn't know that Anna had been sick, that she was being treated, that the treatments were not succeeding, that she had apparently reached some point of acceptance of her fate. I hope that she had indeed settled matters with herself and faced her approaching end with the calm resolution her incredibly strong mind and will were so notably capable of. Bob Webber <webbob@mac.com> Medford, MA United States - Sunday, January 9, 2005 3:00 PM CST The Bustle in a house The Morning after Death is solemnest of industries Enacted upon earth,- The Sweeping up the heart, And putting Love away We shall not want to use again Until Eternity. Emily Dickinson Felicia McGinty - Sunday, January 9, 2005 2:43 PM CST Goodbye, Anna. I wish that I hadn't drifted out of touch, that I'd known sooner, that I could have said "goodbye" while you could still hear me. You were one of the best people in the world while you were with us, and the world is much improved by your work here and just by the effects you had on us just due to your nature. I will always love you and miss you. Bob Webber <webbob@mac.com> Medford, MA United States - Sunday, January 9, 2005 2:41 PM CST Rest well. You are remembered by many, and loved. Elise M. <elise@lioness.net> Minneapolis, MN USA - Sunday, January 9, 2005 2:07 PM CST I found out about Anna yesterday from Joyce Scrivner. I'm so sorry that I didn't know sooner (in fact I was in Seattle Oct 1-2). I've been out of touch with Seattle fans for quite a while now - dealing with lots of Life Stuff - but I remember Anna with great fondness - her smile, sense of humor, her honesty. The world is poorer with her gone from it. Fran Fran Skene <fskene@axion.net> Vancouver, BC Canada - Sunday, January 9, 2005 1:11 PM CST She was someone I've known off and on for nearly a decade and a half, and I'd hoped to get to know her better now that I had more time in my life. And now I never will. Goodbye, Anna. Randolph Fritz <randolph@panix.com> Portland, OR - Sunday, January 9, 2005 12:17 AM CST Love, comfort, and appreciation to all of Anna's caregivers, friends, and family. May we all go as gently as possible through the days and weeks ahead, grieving as we already have been, as we will contine to do...each in our individual ways, but as a community, too. Geri Sullivan <gfs@toad-hall.com> Wales, MA USA - Sunday, January 9, 2005 10:05 AM CST I've been taking your good words to heart - to be involved, to love and care, to accomplish. Pax tucum. Sweet dreams to you. (And many, many thanks to all who have cared for you especially in these past few months.) joyce scrivner <joyce.scrivner@gt.org> minneapolis, mn - Sunday, January 9, 2005 9:51 AM CST I offer thanks to all those who cared for Anna, and helped her, since her illness began, everyone I know and everyone I don't. Jane, Karen, Kate, Tami, and of course, Anna's brothers and sisters and family. Thank you all for what you did for her. My apologies to those I leave un-named. Gary Farber <gary_farber@yahoo.com> Boulder, CO USA - Sunday, January 9, 2005 9:07 AM CST Anna, I'm so sorry you are gone. I ache for my friends, who were also your friends, who will miss you dearly. Eva Whitley <eva@evawhitley.net> Westminster, MD USA - Sunday, January 9, 2005 7:35 AM CST Anna, I hope you were able to see or read the challenge to the Ohio electoral vote. Some really satisfying things were said. And maybe a better voting system will be a legacy for us all. Well, I miss you and your smile and your comforting presence, and I hope you're resting easy. David Bratman <dbratman@earthlink.net> San Jose, CA US - Sunday, January 9, 2005 1:17 AM CST Anna, You are in my thoughts, with love. With peace. Jennifer <jnfr@jnfr.com> Westminster, CO USA - Saturday, January 8, 2005 6:37 PM CST Anna, you were always kind to me, and you will be much missed. Go with grace. Vijay Brooklyn, - Saturday, January 8, 2005 5:20 PM CST Anna, We love you, we'll miss you. You will always be with us. You're one of the reasons we are in fandom and one of the reasons we moved to Seattle in 1990; knowing we had friends like you made the move easier and your friendship brings joy to our lives. You've been a part of our lives, separately and together for so long. You matter to us so much. Andi and Stu <roscoe@drizzle.com> - Saturday, January 8, 2005 12:08 AM CST Anna love, Pax vobiscum. Love go with you. Your smile will be remembered even in grief. D. Potter - Saturday, January 8, 2005 11:59 AM CST Anna, I am thinking of you and wishing the words came a little easier. Peace. Elaine Normandy Colorado Springs, CO - Saturday, January 8, 2005 6:44 AM CST It's really difficult to try and type on a keyboard shelf with a 15# cat trying to lie on it as well. Especially if it's Apollo - the long tailed Maine Coon. Between his fur (and trying to avoid pulling it as I type) and having him head butt me when I lean close to look at the monitor, nothing saves me from fuzz and affection. So I am passing some fuzz along to you with head butting and slight claw catch. Love you joyce scrivner <joyce.scrivner@gt.org> minneapolis, mn - Friday, January 7, 2005 9:29 AM CST Anna, I remember you vividly from AWA and from meeting you in Seattle. I am sorry to hear the news about your illness, and wish that we could have met again. Go gently. The world will be a darker place without you. Sally Beasley <sbbeasley@bigpond.com> Perth, WA Australia - Friday, January 7, 2005 9:25 AM CST Arrived home from Seattle safe and sound. Had a bite with Harry and Michelle Howard yesterday, they send their love. If there is anything we can do for you or bring to you, let us know. I am sure someone can call us for you. Marilyn Holt & Cliff Wind <mjholt@holtcapital.com> Seattle, WA USA - Thursday, January 6, 2005 8:54 PM CST Hi Anna. The xmas card I sent - peace on earth etc. - was a quotation from a solo I got to sing with a community chorus, since I've holed up in a very small pond. I never grew up but I get to drive the town ambulance (I washed out of EMT training as just not something I can do) and sometimes even a fire truck. Well enough about me. Do what you gotta do. Sarah Prince <sarah@ssprince.com> Keene Valley, NY USA - Thursday, January 6, 2005 8:16 PM CST Our dear Anna, You will always be a part of the 'Nage. Thinking of you with love and peace. Paula Sigman Lowery <paula@howardlowery.com> Glendale, CA United States - Thursday, January 6, 2005 7:00 PM CST Anna, I treasure your infinite light. Love and virtual hugs, donya <donya@3wisemonkeys.net> Palo Alto, CA USA - Thursday, January 6, 2005 3:09 PM CST Anna, I was just talking about you the other day with janet, one of the owners of the Yoga Studio I go to. Her night job is the same one you had in the ER. I was remincing on how D. and I would meet you for breakfast (or was it dinner) when you got off work on week-ends. So much of my early life in NY fandoom is link to you (and others). I will always love and treasure the times we had I know my life is better for it. Sue-Rae Sue-Rae Rosenfeld <sue_rae_rosenfeld@yahoo.com> - Wednesday, January 5, 2005 7:12 PM CST Hi Anna; Saw a rabbit in our front yard today, which is not usual for the inner city. Plus it was darned cold out there. It was nibbling what is left of the grass. The cats were beside themselves. It knew we were there behind the glass and eyed us speculativly. Was it expecting something? Frozen grass ain't much to a cold hungry rabbit. I threw out some carrots (a cliche, I guess, but what the heck, they were good enough for Bugs) and some bulgar (I have doubts about rabbits liking bulgar, but what the heck, it's food). This understandably frightened the rabbit, who ran away, but we are hoping that he might come back later and further entertain the cats. There is no point to this story except the hope that it entertains you a bit, too. Warmest wishes to you. Terry Terry Garey <t-gare@umn.edu> - Wednesday, January 5, 2005 1:14 PM CST For some reason, the term "Henna-haired hussy" popped up this morning. [silly grin] Thank you for being here. I love you. D. Potter - Wednesday, January 5, 2005 1:00 PM CST Anna, Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Bruce and Flo Newrock Flo Newrock <bfn@att.net> Flemington, NJ USA - Wednesday, January 5, 2005 7:41 AM CST Hi Anna -- Thinking about you lots, remembering happy times from all those years ago. I was glad to read that Anne Laurie and Stuart were in Seattle for a visit. Ken Josenhans <krj@msu.edu> Ann Arbor, MI - Wednesday, January 5, 2005 0:27 AM CST Anna, We've never ended up spending a lot of time together, but I want you to know that I have always treasured the warmth that I felt from you whenever we met. Topher Cooper <topher@topherc.net> Arlington, MA USA - Tuesday, January 4, 2005 10:04 PM CST A blank box to fill with words, and here I sit, wondering what to say. It's been a long time I dropped out the end of AWA, it was years of intending to join before I joined, and then some years later, minacked out--that meant that I was no longer in contact with Anna and others via AWA. There were Worldcons to see her briefly at, along with the hundreds of other regulars. But now.... It's not like apahacking, writing a note in a box that electronically will be uploaded, and then read to Anna. There isn't the texture of the paper, the give and take of collation comments spread over time and space and different colors of paper, the different fonts and the, er, unique print styles.... I remember Anna wondering what she wanted to be when she grew up... and then engineering found her past the age that most people who become engineers usually start their training. It seemed that there would always be time, "see you at some convention, or maybe Worldcon, next year!" But then I look up, and years have passed, and faces change, and some appear only in memory. When I think of Anna my mental picture is of her smiling, in that sudden whimsical, thoughtful grin when something occurs to her, with fast changes between serious and frivolous, but always thoughtful and whimsical and inventive--and that's how I will always thinik of Anna, as someone I corresponded with for far too short a time, saw far too little of separated by thousands of miles, but someone whose presence has made the world a brighter place. Paula Lieberman - Tuesday, January 4, 2005 9:39 PM CST OK, here's the plan: we will all meet at the Continental (a restaurant Anna likes), but this time at its Pearly Gates branch. Some of will arrive sooner than others, but I have a feeling that the best thing is to turn left after arriving at the Gates, as presumably you are then sitting at the right hand...you know...which probably means a better table. Anna will of course order tea; I'm not sure about the coffee (is there decaf up there, or only decaf? Why else would people talk about "eternal rest"?) Anyway, I'm assuming there is a thirty-year wait for service, unless some of you volunteer to help out. (Well, you have all eternity, so thirty years won't seem all that long.) Remember how many tea drinkers have gone before, and you'll see why I'm estimating a bit high. Although some people will want to be waited on, others would prefer to help out. Meanwhile we can practice our Aramaic or maybe find someone famous to chat with. Oscar Wilde (who undoubtedly didn't depart in the upward direction) did say he didn't intend to, as he thought the conversations of those Down Below would be more interesting (compare Cleopatra to say, Pollyanna). Still, there is something to be said for his imagination. I am quite confident that we can do this, having several times encountered acquaintances in Paris who just happened to be walking down the same street at the same time of the day. So be of good cheer, we shall be sitting around a table together soon enough. Eggplant Nancy Raynaud <Pattysullivan43@Yahoo.com> Seattle, WA USA - Tuesday, January 4, 2005 3:23 PM CST Strange days sweetie. I've imagined for years that I'd finally move to Seattle - wet rather than icey. And I still haven't done it. However, last night I had a phone call from a friend in Bellingham! Carla Rutschman is 'MrsTuba' and teaches tuba at Western Washington state as well as playing in many orchestra around the world (there are few lady tuba players.) I've known her since I played clarinet in high school (a long outgrown vice of mine.) We commiserated to each other and I reminded her that you both had met each other somewhere in the University district when I visited Carla practicing for a Washington State governor's inaugral ball pratice. So even my long distance calls remind me of you. A friend has sent me a copy of an unpublished (in English) Moomintroll story. (A friend of his sent it to him.) So I'm mailing a copy of it to you for reading as can be. Much love and hugs from a distance. joyce scrivner <kscriv@earthlink.net> minneapolis, mn - Tuesday, January 4, 2005 12:33 AM CST Hello Anna -- winter in Maine means... a dozen wild turkeys scrounging seed and rosehips in the dooryard and a calico cat racing from window to window to keep track of them. The other cats are older, and they are bored, bored, bored, by the turkeys... Hugs from both of us. We're thinking of you and wish Maine was a bit closer to the left coast so we could visit. Heck, here's another hug, just because.... {{ }} Steve and Sharon Steve Miller <srm@korval.com> Unity, ME USA - Tuesday, January 4, 2005 10:32 AM CST Happy New Year, Pumpkin-San! Charlie Spear <charles.spear@seattle.gov> - Thursday, December 30, 2004 5:04 PM CST "Ann's hair is growing in as a sort of peach fuzz below the wisps remaining." I recall a time far earlier in life in which she found some peach fuzz attractive, sexy, and interesting, in some. She should rest assured that it still seems that way to some, even without bias. Also, beds that let one sit up and move about are very very good. I'd have loved one the past week, as I recover from back spasm (first case in my life since the 1985 spinal tap!). They're a Good Thing. I've started blogging the odd, the amusing, the outrageous, again, at my blog, here, again, if Anna ever find herself up for looking at my humble efforts at amusement and meaning. Thoughts on the importance of the new, immediate, holidays, here and offered with hopes it isn't all too much. For too much, I have archives, and beyond that, I wish for Anna the best possible new year, and the best possible new day, every day, as we all should cherish, even as we try our best to follow Anna's wishes, as we love her. I love you, sweetie pie and funny face. Sleep well. Did you ever think you'd need, or have, a social secretary? I've just read Bob Dylan's book, Chronicles, and remembering that _Blood on the Tracks_ was the soundtrack of our lives in the year it came out. ("Our" means you, me, all our friends and loved ones at the time.) Whenever I heard one song from that album back then, I thought of you: "You're Going to Make Me Lonesome When You Go." It's got joy and bouyancy. (Not sure of the spelling, there.) You've always had those qualities. See you soon. Jerry Kaufman <jakaufman@aol.com> Seattle, WA - Wednesday, December 29, 2004 4:31 PM CST I've been dilatory about posting here, not because I haven't been sending wishes but because it's hard to know what to say. Love and all the best, Carol Ballard <Basingstke@aol.com> Seattle, WA USA - Monday, December 27, 2004 1:44 PM CST Happy post-Christmas and pre-New Year, and congratulations on the pre-pre-ringlets beginning to sprout like little daffodils (looks like an early spring, doesn't it...) Received gifts that didn't need dusting (my request to California relatives) and they turned out to be mostly edible: peanut-butter stuff pretzel thingies, dried blueberries, seed and snack mixes, mints, and a Starbucks card. Saw that Very Long Engagement movie; way too many explosions and life in the trenches scenes, but some nice bits of life in the French countryside. (There was a real dearth of Christmas-appropriate stuff: I mean, really! The life of Kinsey? Biography of Howard Hughes?) Hope you are warm and comfortable (my Minnesota relatives sent lined gloves, apparently reacting to their own -7 temperatures). Rough Draft (the somewhat Siamese purrchunk that looks like its markings were painted on during a celestial power failure) sends a Christmas meow. Remember to follow the new garbage recycling rules for 2005 (rather difficult..for apartment dwellers who need to cram several waste containers into a tiny kitchen for food waste, paper waste, etc.. I will be thinking of you, and wish you peace, comfort, wellness, and a safe journey forward from here... Jeff Schalles <jeffs@tcinternet.net> Minneapolis, MN US - Saturday, December 25, 2004 7:26 PM CST Hello Anna -- Yule, Christmas? How do the cats know, I wonder? The tree's been up a week, after all... but this morning the cats got me awake at 3 am, just as if we had kids waiting for their goodies. Sigh... chance of snow tonight, which is good, since the grinch sent us three days of rain and hot weather (hey, 55 F on December 23 is hot in Central Maine!) Crystal Dragon continues apace... that's apace with Sword of Orion. Right, now were juggling two books at once, due within a few weeks of one another. Please do not try this at home.... thankfully only one of them is a Liaden book. We're promised that Balance of Trade will hit the stores in trade paper next week, and that Crystal Soldier will hit the stores in February in hard cover. We pushed a bit and arranged for a few advance reading copies since the publisher was considering skipping them for Crystal Soldier because of deadline problems... Watch the skies, as they say -- Steve, who is avoiding his daily Sword of Orion words for the moment (and for Sharon, who is finishing up her Crystal Dragon words for the day).. ps, if you see something about a book called "Crystal Solider", that's likely a typo born of my dyslexic fingers, which seem to be much more likely to ache and complain and balk and mistype in winter, for all that I like winter... SRM Steve Miller <srm@korval.com> Unity, ME USA - Saturday, December 25, 2004 1:15 PM CST Merry Christmas, my dear (and Joyous Kwanzaa, Cubic Boxing Day, Happy Hogmanay, and a Gnädige Yul; New Year's is on its own). There's a card on its way to you. I'm so glad we could spend time together, and my heart is with you. D. Potter <potterdinoak@mac.com> Oakland, CA United States - Thursday, December 23, 2004 7:26 PM CST Well dear cousin, it's almost Christmas. We have minimal snow on the ground in Minnesota; however, the temperatures are a strong indication that winter is here. The current high is minus 8, then you factor in the wind chills and that drops it down to the range of 25 to 35 below. Saying that it is cold isn't a sufficient description of the reality of these temperatures. The car (parked in our heated garage) was whining this morning on the way to work. Please keep yourself warm and while we have you in our thoughts you can be reminded how grateful you are that you aren't stranded in another terrible Minnesota winter! Cuddle up and enjoy a wonderful book! Merry Christmas! Ray, Valerie, Heather & Nicole Thrower <vthrower@gac.edu> St Peter, MN (a.k.a. The Frozen Tundra) - Thursday, December 23, 2004 10:10 AM CST Strange days here. I was planning to drive to Denver leaving Monday, but then I had an interview on Monday. And several people calling me re. jobs Tuesday and sent two resumes out today. Will have a phone call on one tomorrow. So I'm not driving to Denver - besides it's *cold*. (Minus temps here since Sunday - which made the *rain* on Monday turn to ice immediately. The remains of that are still causing slick walking and driving. Just right for my falling down once a winter time bit.) Anyway, I've been sorting stuff and writing my seasonal letter - which with luck (and some brisk walking) will get photocopied tomorrow and then shipped out by the 24 hour post office - very useful place. Meanwhile I reccommend peach juice, peach balm and lavender bath salts. I've scratched the cats, and they are feeling I haven't spent enough time on that, but so it goes. Love (and more later) Joyce Sciivner <kscriv@earthlink.net> minneapolis, mn - Wednesday, December 22, 2004 10:44 PM CST Hello Anna. I really enjoyed our visit; it was good to spend so much time with you. I am very pleased to have the Robert Graves books on Greek mythology, thank you. I had a good visit to Seattle in general, though I have obviously acclimated to balmier California as I thought it was cold! A climate weenie, that's me. Take care, you're in my thoughts. Lucy Huntzinger <huntzinger@mindspring.com> - Tuesday, December 21, 2004 10:37 PM CST Dear Anna: I didn't Know, not until today, when I read Geri Sullivan's news in the "announcements" section of the December 15th Instant Message. I guess that shows how out of the loop I've gotten since the heady days of publishing SF Chronicle. Owell. I wish you the very best, the least pain, the best friends to help you, the most love I have to offer. We're not in Poughkeepsie anymore, alas -- would that we were. I have been on this road before, with my Mom, who I think you may have met (as I have yours, so many times). I'm not a religious person, but I will nod in the direction of Dorothy Day's birthplace, just down Pineapple Street (or so I'm told by one of my building's resident clergy). Perhaps that will suffice. I'll go look at 35 years of photos of you, now... Andy Porter <andyporter@ix.netcom.com> Brooklyn, NY USA - Monday, December 20, 2004 10:31 PM CST Bulletin from the Outside World: Patty and I went to Tiffany's to get my Timex watch battery changed. However, my patronage was icily declined because I hadn't purchased the watch there. Decided purchasing a diamond watch to get the correct time might not be cost effective, and went to Cartier, where we got free champagne or Perrier. Service still declined, so finally wound up at Ben Bridge. Moral: Never give up (make it your motto). A Christmas card is on its way to you, although I'm not sure when it will arrive. How's the hair doing? Maybe you can have a competition with a Chia Pet and see whose grows first. At least you have curls to work with, when they show up. Very glad to hear that the radiation seems to have made a positive difference. I have read several times that the cancer patient should bear in mind that if she/he feels rotten as a result of treatments, she/he should remember that the cancer cells undoubtedly feel much worse (as the treatment is designed to attack them and not your healthier bits). I think you should celebrate with something (champagne? wheat grass juice? I do recommend pomegranate juice, having tried it. Not as sweet as cranberry but it does seem to have a somewhat energizing effect.) BTW I noticed that the dried cranberries (Craisins) seem to have absolutely no Vitamin C; I suspect it was stomped out of them to create cranberry juice. (Take a look at the package; Craisins seem to contain almost nothing of any value whatsoever, but they are so cute and tangy. Pity.) Have a Merry Christmas, and continue full speed forward progress. I enclose virtual sugarplums guaranteed to dance in your head. Eggplant Nancy Raynaud <Pattysullivan43@Yahoo.com> Seattle, WA USA - Monday, December 20, 2004 7:06 PM CST I know you weren't a comics fan as a kid (or later), but do keep in mind that according to the 1960's gospel, being exposed to radiation gives you a very strong chance of developing super powers (beyond those you already possess), so keep an eye out for developments. (My latest: I've developed immobilizing back spasm! What new kind of pain will I find next?) Cautionary tip: if you get super-powers, carefully check out any group that asks you to join to make sure they aren't secretly Bad Guys. Gary Farber <gary_farber@yahoo.com> Boulder, CO USA - Monday, December 20, 2004 10:50 AM CST Hi! Just checking in so's you'll know I'm still thinking of you. And praying for you. It's been a while since I've done the Rosary regularly, but I read that you wanted prayers to Dorothy Day for her intercession, and I know that she was a big fan of the Rosary. So every time I remember you to Dorothy Day, I toss in a whole bunch of Hail Marys. Sort of like buttering Dorothy Day up, if you catch my meaning. Hey, think of her as a sort of heavenly union negotiator. It's not a bad thing to sweeten one's bargaining offer! In other news, I'm mailing out my last batch of Christmas cards tomorrow morning, including one destined to your PO box. As for what I want for Christmas, pal, it's to have you beat this thing so we can see you at the local fancelebration next Christmas. Ho-ho-ho and fight-fight-fight, Mark Mark Manning <TandMark@aol.com> Seattle, WA USA - Friday, December 17, 2004 10:41 PM CST I'm going to try to make it up to see you. Doug Faunt <faunt@panix.com> - Friday, December 17, 2004 9:08 PM CST Dear Anna, Best wishes for a speedy recovery, and as little pain as possible. I haven't been out to the Pacific Northwest in too long, and you're one of the people I miss. Love, Vicki Vicki Rosenzweig <vr@redbird.org> New York, - Friday, December 17, 2004 7:16 PM CST In between tearing up when I belatedly heard of your illness this week, I thought about the many good memories of the too-few occasions I got to spend time with you. The one that keeps coming most vividly to my mind is the winter of 1978/79 when you crashed in Minneapolis on your way moving household from east to west coast, and we went to see WATERSHIP DOWN together at a local movie house, having both missed the showing at Iggy earlier that year. When we came out, a Minnesota winter night was in full swing with the temperature cold enough to freeze a Vulcan's ears off, and we had to wait in the car for what seemed like the better part of a half hour before it warmed up enough for us to trust it to keep going. So naturally I filled in the time by offering terrible jokes, culminating in my ghu-awful infamous Shaggy Dog story trilogy of tales of "The Blue Brick, The Pink Ping-Pong Ball, and The Duck on the Plane." Nobody else (in my memory now anyway) had ever let me get through the lot without threatening severe bodily harm, but you not only patiently listened to the whole routine (and fell for the trap at the penultimate line) but actually laughed long and loud, and hardly threatened to disembowel me at all. (Maybe you were Just Being Kind because you thought you needed me to give you driving directions, but if so you were fooled since when we did start up I quickly managed to get us lost -- in my own city.) So I think you were either Just Being Kind because you were (and are) kind, and/or because you had such joy in life that you could even laugh at the world's worst and longest shaggy dog stories in spite of fear of freezing to death in a battery-dead car in a Minnesota winter. And *that,* Sweetie, is some pretty double-damn impressive joy in life. Wish I were there to tell you some new and equally bad shaggy dog stories, and that you then were feeling strong and chipper enough to laugh like that again (or, if you decided enough was enough with the bad jokes, to disembowel me good and proper this time--your choice). Rambling...but hope it's good for a smile at least, dear. Denny Lien <d-lien@tc.umn.edu> Minneapolis, MN USA - Friday, December 17, 2004 5:48 PM CST In retrospect the phrase: "the streets and sewers of Seattle are so much better for your having worked on them" could be improved somewhat...;-) xxxTerry <t-gare@umn.edu> - Thursday, December 16, 2004 4:18 PM CST Hi Anna; Thanks for letting us know. Denny and I are pretty much out of the loop these days, not because we don't care, but we're just old farts who need to get out more. I know this is scary and painful for you. You have my admiration and respect for the way you've handled it. We all need to learn how to deal with the end of life, and if nothing else, you are teaching us, and darned well, too. Thanks for being a wonderful feminist fan, a vibrant, cute and interesting person, and just think, the streets and sewers of Seattle are so much better for your having worked on them! More people owe you than even know you for that. Civilization is better because of you in many aspects. Many gentle hugs from afar... Terry Garey Terry A. Garey <t-gare@umn.edu> Minneapolis, MN 55407 - Thursday, December 16, 2004 12:48 AM CST I was in Tempe recently - for World Fantasy Con. The last time I was in the area was for a certain Worldcon in nearby Phoenix. Which brough back a flood of memories of that long weekend, of a trip to Seattle, of other cons. I wish I could say more, but I fear it would sound all wrong. Rest, gather your strength. Love, Michael Michael Walsh <mjw@press.jhu.edu> Baltimore, MD USA - Thursday, December 16, 2004 11:10 AM CST dearest anna, just back from england and cousin cathy updated me on your medical status. thinking of you constantly and hoping for response to radiation. what do you need/want? love, rachel rachel willis <rachel.willis@unc.edu> durham, nc usa - Thursday, December 16, 2004 6:04 AM CST Congratulations on completing your radiation treatments. (Do you get a "Radiation Graduation" certificate? Certainly should! Hope you are perking up at the prospect of "time off" and that your curls will soon be back in full glory. Nancy Raynaud <Pattysullivan43@Yahoo.com> Seattle, WA USA - Wednesday, December 15, 2004 2:10 PM CST Checking in to say Meow once more. I hope the radiation goes well and without all the side effects of chemo. Encourage all positive influences and let the sun shine in to your room (if there is any...this is Washington). If no sun, turn on lights and music to brighten your mood. Change chairs from time to time (a different view can open new vistas in your mind). Remember Florble? [Other readers: this was filler I used when I was learning the advanced features of my word processor, like columns and graphics. It became a sort of personal fanzine and had maybe a dozen issues, as it developed a life of its own.] I keep mulling over another issue (except my old computer can't do it any more), but it involves Pumpkin-San and Eggplant on the plane to Europe, having passed through security despite questions about "sufficient reading matter for the flight" and suspiciously bulky attire (Eggplant's stash of bottled water, energy bars, and chocolate triggering the metal detector, as chocolate can "read" as explosives). Then there was the mixup of melanin (self-tanner) and melatonin (for jet lag), so that Eggplant wound up with a striped face and Pumpkin took the round-trip supply of Jet Lag by mistake and wound up where she started, but 24 hours off. And don't forget the embarrassing incident when Eggplant tried to multitask in the plane restroom, doing Airplane Yoga while donning her Universal Multicultural Wrinkleproof Travel Garment and wound up pretzeled. "ANYONE could get a foot caught in the armhole!" I forgot: while we were waiting in line, Eggplant tried to befriend a cat in a carrier, but it turned out to be traveling first class. We had a small pit bull in economy (in a carrier, of course) in the next row, and Eggplant suggested feeding the crying baby to it to solve a couple of problems at the same time. Pumpkin objecting to this, Eggplant countered by secretly spiking the infant's milk bottle so that it slept through the flight. And then did we foil the hijacker by offering him some halvah to raise his blood sugar? Probably. Let's see...there was the problem of Eggplant's map of important genealogy sites of her ancestors, as it was taken for a plot to blow up Versailles (her ancestor lived just across the street from the palace and the map's X-mark ran over a bit due to Seattle rain). There must be more somewhere; the great work continues. Be of good cheer, and remember you are in our hearts and on our minds! Eggplant Nancy Raynaud <Pattysullivan43@Yahoo.com> Seattle, WA USA - Tuesday, December 14, 2004 12:39 AM CST Hi, Anna. I'm conveying warm wishes from the NESFAns who were at the clubhouse for today's Boskone and NESFA meetings. Along with my own, of course. Geri Sullivan <gfs@toad-hall.com> Wales, MA United States - Sunday, December 12, 2004 9:54 PM CST So now you will be "RADIANT"? Sounds less taxing than being infused with chemicals...Maintain good spirits and do your ankle circles, etc. to keep as lively as possible. Saw a Shroud of Turin tshirt (offered by a yoga firm in Kirkland). This is beyond belief but it comes in over 24 colors so someone is sure it will be a big hit. Where on earth could you wear it without being struck by a bolt from above? We're all pulling for you, Pumpkin-San and sending you symbolic gifts of chocolate and eggnog (in spirit, anyhow). Eggplant Nsncy Raynaud <Pattysullivan43@Yahoo.com> Seattle, WA USA - Friday, December 10, 2004 6:43 PM CST Hi again sweetie! Job stuff in Virginia was canceled by them after interview. *Shrug* Their problem. The job sounded fun though - working with NASA! Anyway, am interviewing for a job in Oregon tomorrow. We'll see. And interviewing for a job in Colorado next week. Am planning to set off for Colorad sometime around then for Xmas and such. Will plan on visiting Mother Cabrini's shrine for you. Otherwise, much love, and thought - will be in touch. *hugs* joyce scrivner <kscriv@earthlink.net> minneapolis, mn usa - Thursday, December 9, 2004 10:29 PM CST Sending virtual BestWishes, and I'll see you soon. D. Potter Oakland, CA United States - Thursday, December 9, 2004 9:23 PM CST I sent you a short story for Tami to read to you if you're in the mood. It is a very snarky take on romance novels. No one else has read it so you have an exclusive! Tonight I will be singing Charpentier's mass and thinking of you. Deum de Deo, lumen de lumine...I'm lighting a candle nightly for you. Lucy Huntzinger <huntzinger@mindspring.com> - Thursday, December 9, 2004 8:30 PM CST You have all my prayers and best wishes, have since I heard of this whole thing. I hope that it ends with what is best for you. As much peace and grace as can be managed, and as much love and care. Blessed be. Paula Helm Murray <dragonet@kc.rr.com> Kansas City, MO USA - Thursday, December 9, 2004 8:11 PM CST Hiya hiya...(note NLP here). Remember to accept your meds as necessary (do you skip novocain in the dentist's chair? Did St. Sebastian request a few extra arrows? Don't think so...) I hope you can enjoy some TV from time to time. Recommended: Sundance and Bravo channels, and IFC (independent films). Also TCM (Turner Classic Movies) where you will see people like Buster Keaton, Greta Garbo, etc. and marvel at the background details like shapes of telephones, number of hats worn by nearly everyone, and get . .glimpses of restaurant prices that make us long for the good old days. Re your hair: remember, it returns, and I happened across an article that said that once it is 1/2 inch long, you can apply extensions to it. You could just do a couple of ringlets in the front and side sections (I happened to see someone on the AVE who had a similar haircut by choice, and it looked interesting). We are all thinking of you and wishing you well, Pumpkin-San! Be determined to win! Eggplant Nancy Raynaud <.Pattysullivan43@Yahoo.com> Seattle, WA USA - Wednesday, December 8, 2004 3:39 PM CST Good luck with the cat scan (forget whether you have had one, but I have . and it was painless though a bit claustrophobic. Remember, the phrase is "sink or swim" (not drift, or float) so be sure to be open to suggestion from your medical support team. Somebody was once brave enough to take the first pill, or get vaccinated, etc., and something new may work for you. I am also wondering whether diabetes could be useful in some way (in modifying your reactions to certain drugs) or whether your chemo cocktail is (through human error) not taking it into account. Your research team should be phoning anyone working on your type of cancer (as literature takes months or years to get published). Ask the doctor what his/her research team is working on this week or planning to do in January; who do they admit are their rivals in research (there is bound to be somebody) and what approach are the rivals taking? Did you know there is a young woman (class of '75) at the UW who has just won the Nobel Prize for cancer research of some type? (Call Oncology and they'll know...there aren't many Nobel winners in a department.) She may have some useful contacts. That Cancer Alliance group certainly has a positive approach in its ads on TV and if your care team isn't part of it, consider a visit. Remember you are a valued "vegetable" and we are all gathered around ready to support you in any way we can. Enjoy the Christmas lights on the way to the cat scan, listen to music during the thing if you can, and drink some chai when you get back for inner warmth and strength. Think of us as gathered around, each holding a finger or a toe (there are too many of us to hold a hand or foot). Eggplant Nancy Raynaud <Pattysullivan43@Yahoo.com> Seattle, wa usa - Monday, December 6, 2004 6:29 PM CST From Google to Youooogle! I have been inspired by a bunch of bulbs (forgotten in my basement storage area where I had to put them during the apartment's porch remodel). Despite tough conditions (no light, soil or water) many of them had begun to sprout; there was even a cockeyed optimist with a two-inch sprout, and whatever he/she/it is, I expressed my admiration to the group and planted them (with a dose of bulb food). I think I did the right thing. In fact, afterwards I had a three-cat day (one in bookstore, two belonging to neighbors) which is above average and in fact, outstanding. Remember that if a cat squints at you, it means "I trust you...at least long enough to blink" (which in cat time is quite a long while, and you may return the gesture, and discover the cat may return the blink as if to say, "And where did you learn to speak our language? Is that a chicken leg in your pocket, by chance?" To review, grab for joy, because you never know when you may actually catch the brass ring. Meanwhile, you could show up at the Dec. 7 appointment in Groucho Marx glasses (and maybe a fez to keep your head warm) which should impress your doctor and his/staff with your spirit. If you prefer a scarf, avoid tying under the chin ("Welcome to the Ukraine!") unless you tie the knot to the side. (A lesson from Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot, etc.) Or you can tie it at the back of the neck, like Jackie Kennedy. The look will be improved with earrings. (Try it!) Cotton slips less than silk. There is also a "Dutch Bonnet tie" that creates a cap, but I can never remember how to do it without an instruction booklet (there are quite a few steps and you don't insert your head into your creation where you think you should, although I have been able to do it a couple of times.) You gave me a good, strong hug when I left and I am convinced you are tougher than you think! Eggplant Nancy Raynaud <Pattysullivan43@Yahoo.com> Seattle, WA USA - Saturday, December 4, 2004 12:26 AM CST Jane tells me you have a VCR thingy. Consider renting the Marilyn Monroe picture also starring Laurence Olivier and marvel at Marilyn's rear end stealing the scene from Olivier. You can turn off the sound if you hate the "Marilyn" voice, but watch Olivier's "actor" face trying to play his stereotypical role and his "real" face as he knows that Marilyn is upstaging him at every turn. Must be seen to be believed! Also watch Cleopatra with Elizabeth Taylor and see if you can spot the dress with the zipper which mysteriously was overlooked by the people who are in charge of avoiding anachronisms. I inspired myself to buy some pomegranate juice, and now report that it is quite nice (rather like cranberry juice) and the tag says it is loaded with antioxidants, which is a Good Thing, apparently. Do try it; the odd bottle is also easy to grip. Eat well, undissuaded by what appears on your grocery slip. I discovered recently that I had apparently bought and consumed "crab dung" and it took me several seconds to realize that this was simply Safeway's abbreviation for Dungeness crab. Be of good cheer; December 7 is Pearl Harbor Day, right, and War on Cancer is our watchword and victory is our goal. Eggplant Nancy Raynaud <Pattysullivan43@Yahoo.com> Seattle, WA USA - Friday, December 3, 2004 2:43 PM CST Dear Anna: I didn't know you were ill until I got a posting jusst today on the MadSFlist by Tracy Benton. Well, cancer sucks, but you already know that. I am thinking only positive thoughts about you; you're a unique person, and I feel privileged to be a friend, though we haven't seen a lot of each other for a number of years. I'm so sorry you're having to endure the indignity of the pain and trouble of this lousy disease and its treatment. I can only hope that the chemo and other treatment starts to do more good for you, and you can get through this. You're way too young to stop being Anna Vargo. Jim Frenkel <jfrenkel@panix.com> Madison, WI U.S.A. - Wednesday, December 1, 2004 4:56 PM CST Hope you are improving the day in any way you can. What's the most fun (or most comforting) thing you can do right now? Wrap up in something fluffy? Drink POM (the pomegranate juice that comes in that weird bottle)? Listen to music? (Try different volumes and music styles to see which works best.) Sniff perfume or a scented candle? Do something so at least parts of you are happy. Re music (or talk radio): lie very still (you are allowed to breathe and blink) and listen. If you can still distinguish a tune or words, turn volume down a little, resuming "still" position. Repeat until asleep. (By keeping very still you relax the body, and by turning down the volume you engage the mind and cut down on "mind chatter". As the volume goes down it takes on a different quality. Try it!) .Eggplant .Nancy Raynaud <Pattysullivan43@Yahoo..com> Seattle, WA USA - Wednesday, December 1, 2004 4:26 PM CST Hello! Andi told me the basics of what was going on, and, after I had done my usual bit of slamming my hand on the desk and yelling "fuck, fuck, fuck!" (not true, as I am living as part of a family with two kids, so such language would have been unappreciated, but surely I can think it) I decided to visit this page as well as send you a note. The note is, as usual, not a homage to the g-d of instant gratification, but will surely last longer. and can always be used for lighting candles. Please marshall your strength and get well. Many pies were eaten. hugs, Ruth ruth white <rootwhite@yahoo.com> san jose, ca us - Saturday, November 27, 2004 3:11 PM CST I give thanks for all you have contributed to so many of us; you have no idea how important you've been to so many lives, sweet baboo. Do be sure to taste a bit of each Thanksgiving dish; it's the least you can do for both the sake of the dish, which has reached its culmination in life, and for the cook. Gary Farber <gary_farber@yahoo.com> Boulder, CO USA - Thursday, November 25, 2004 4:43 PM CST More thoughts from a distance sweetie. Mother Cabrini's shrine is outside Denver on my travels between my mother and sister's houses (Lakewood and Evergreen) which I pass every year sometime. Next time I'm there I will drive up and stop and light a candle for you. Am praying - and am being thankful that you are around. I still recall driving to New York City to stay with you the weekend after my car was totalled and then driving back in the very early hours of Sunday night/Monday morning to work in Pennsylvania. That stop and time with you were much appreciated. Much love, prayers, thanksgiving, joyce scrivner <kscriv@earthlink.net> minneapolis, mn - Thursday, November 25, 2004 3:03 PM CST Hi Anna, I am smoking a turkey today, thinking about Thanksgiving, and what it is supposed to mean. I.e. what is it I have to be thankful for, what is it we have to be thankful for, and what is it you have to be thankful for. The little things, like finally at age 40, figuring out a decent pie crust recipe. Some tears are in my eyes, but I remember I have a sister who introduced me to the finer points of cannoli, aka 'cannolli a sicilia.' I am thankful for a nice visit with you, last week. I am very greatful and thankful for HOPE, Walter, Karen, and the 'Anna's Helper Team.' I love you much, my "Lady of Guadalupe" candle is buring. My sister Pat along with all the members of Boston Dignity are in there for you. (hey, my sister hangs with an intersting crowd; last I knew, she was attending church at the Paulist Center, which if you must know, is where John Kerry spends his time too when he's home on Sundays) (or as Jon Stewart called it one night on "The Daily Show" "Our Lady of Forgot to Read the Small Print") I knew Pat would appreciate especially interceding with Dorothy Day, as that's one of her special folks too and says all your friends and family are in there too, but especially you. Andi <roscoe@drizzle.com> Seattle, - Wednesday, November 24, 2004 4:33 PM CST Prayers en route to designated destinations. Down here below, I also sent a check to the ACS. Isabella the cat (the bookstore intern cat) sends a wonderful purr and yawn. We are all pulling for you and hope the cat scan gives you some good news. I can't come now because I still have a wicked cold, and I know you can't be exposed to it. I'm singing in several concerts between Dec. 4th and 12th. I sing with the Skyline Concert Choir. We are doing Charpentier's beautiful Midnight Christmas Mass this year. I will sing it with you in mind. Lucy Huntzinger <lucy@spies.com> - Sunday, November 21, 2004 11:18 PM CST This message is about Anna rather than for Anna (hello, Anna). For those who pray and who ask for the intercession of saints, the saints Anna has in mind are Mother Cabrini and Dorothy Day. Mother Cabrini is a full-fledged saint; Dorothy Day has only been beatified, and she still needs some miracles to achieve full canonization. Anna would be happy to add to Dorothy Day's credentials for sainthood. Kate Schaefer <kate@oz.net> Seattle, WA - Sunday, November 21, 2004 7:58 PM CST Anna, This weekend I drove to the High Point furniture market as a few years ago you sent me a great murder mystery set there. Found all the buildings and streets mentioned in the book and wished we could take this field trip together. And many others. Stay strong. We will have fun journeys together when you get better. Let me know if you need me to come and cook, clean, or even read with you! You and everyone helping you daily are in my prayers and thoughts. Jerry Kaufman <jakaufman@aol.com> Seattle, WA USA - Wednesday, November 17, 2004 9:03 PM CST Dear Anna, So good to hug you (gently!). Not calling this week because of all your other visitors. Sorry i was a stress puppy at your house but am doing much better now. Will see ENT that pulmonologist referred me to tomorrow but half afraid, half hoping, the only cure is moving to a hot dry place, maybe Reno, as a college friend of ours keeps trying to talk us into. Love, Felicia Felicia McGinty - Wednesday, November 17, 2004 1:36 PM CST Just thinking of you - as I usually do daily somewhere, somewhen - not usually at the computer though, which is the only time I'd write a comment. I've passed the technical interview - I'm scheduled to fly to Hampton VA (near Norfolk) on Sunday and interview (and return) on Monday. I've scheduled a update re. interviewing with a good interview coach tomorrow and a hair cut for Saturday. And am wibbling, wibbling, wibbling about the entire thing - not to mention the idea of moving to Virginia two weeks after this if the job really comes through, .... (Yes, I'd keep the condo, no I won't take everything - but how to do that, etc.?) Wibble. Wibble. Wibble. (If this goes through you will really get a box of stuff, let me tell you.) Meantime, pet cats, put cold feet under covers, list more books to sell, today is job club, and hopefully raking some more leaves (even if they are slightly damp.) Much love - say Hi to Dorothy. *hug* joyce scrivner <kscriv@earthlink.net> minneapolis, mn usa - Wednesday, November 17, 2004 11:43 AM CST Howdy! I've been reading the journal & the guestbook, catching up with your last couple of weeks. Anyway, it looks like some days are better, and some days aren't. Par for the course, m'dear. The overall trend, I can see from the written record, is decidedly upwards. Yippie! I see you & some folks went out to moongaze a couple of days ago (for the eclipse, I bet). Did you see the aurora the other day too? Alas, I've always been in the wrong place at the wrong time for auroras, and even missed that eclipse. What can I say? I'm a failure at being a science fiction fan! Got to sign off & get some aspirin. Had a little fall down some stairs earlier this month; no big deal. But if I could have just taken on a little of your chemo discomfort the way your City co-workers can gift you with their vacation time, I'd have gladly volunteered! Cheers! Mark Manning <TandMark@aol.com> Seattle, WA USA - Tuesday, November 16, 2004 8:58 PM CST Hey, Anna -- I still think fond thoughts of hanging out with you in Seattle during various trips. Sarah Prince <sarah@ssprince.com> Keene Valley, NY usa - Monday, November 15, 2004 2:38 PM CST Dear Anna, I have very warm memories of hanging out with you at Orycon, and sharing a room one night (Lise organized this, I think). I'd have liked to spend more time together, but a continent was in the way. Love, Vicki Vicki Rosenzweig New York, NY 10034 - Monday, November 15, 2004 2:15 PM CST Hi Anna, Cliff and I are thinking of you. We send our love, and think thoughts for you to feel better. I saw your nephew Arthur and his girlfriend, Jenna, at Orycon. He said that he would help us on the Endeavour Award, sending out books and finding preliminary readers. I also saw Richard Purtil, who I hadn't seen in 20 years, Jim Fisucs, who I correspond with all the time, and others including the Seattle fans I see less frequently than I would like. I missed seeing you. I drove down and roomed with Elinor Busby. We did this last year, too. Buz wasn't up for the trip, and Cliff had to work. See you soon, Marilyn Marilyn Holt <mjholt@holtcapital.com> Seattle, WA 98117 - Monday, November 15, 2004 10:52 AM CST Hi Anna. I was thinking about the time we were housemates on 8th in Seattle when I was a baby fan. And you said you wanted to show me something, to follow you upstairs. I did and you opened your bedroom door. We crept in and there you proudly revealed Gary's bare behind. He was fast asleep. We stared at it. Then we left, giggling. Do you remember? That was such a fun household. I'll always be really happy you invited me to be a housemate there at my one and only Slan Shack. Take care of yourself. Love from Lucy. Lucy Huntzinger <huntzinger@mindspring.com> - Sunday, November 14, 2004 0:58 AM CST In the "minor victories" column, and we could all use those, it appears we successfully fought city hall on the Seattle city budget. After intense lobbying by folks who benefit from the service, folks who support the service AND the union (my old union, AFSCME) (rah), the funding for the library's essential mobile services (that's the bookmobile PLUS) was at least 2/3 restored. It ain't world peace and universal whatever, but it's a good thing, huh? Stu and I think of you ALL the time - I'll talk with Jane about what I can do that won't mean _more_ work for folks and hope to see you if and when you want. Andi <roscoe@drizzle.com> Seattle, - Sunday, November 14, 2004 0:23 AM CST Cats still demanding to be petted - they are cats, so natch. Carpets still requiring to be cleaned (see first sentence.) I've read Eileen's book of short stories. Good on her to get it in print! For useful work around the house I'm now working at raking leaves. Then I haven't done much of that in years. Meantime, I have a technical phone interview with someone in Hampton Beach VA on Monday - if I pass muster there they will fly me out and if I pass muster there, they will ship me body, books and cats to the east coast. Hard to decide whether I want to work there and decide how much to pack up or stay here and keep painting walls and such. Meantime, more photos of Boston (from the Duck boat) will arrive in your POBox. I checked with the appropriate people at work and found out that it is possible for me to donate sick leave to someone who works in a different City department, so I'd be happy to give you a week of mine if you'd find that helpful. Gary Farber <gary_farber@yahoo.com> Boulder, co - Monday, November 1, 2004 7:15 PM CST Hello Anna and Walter, only 30 or so Trick and treaters last night. Every year we have a trick to play and so it was this year -a tray of burnt to a crisp casserole drippings which looked and smelled bad! Then, of course, we make the switch to the candy. Had our first fire in the fireplace of the year. Autumn has certainly arrived. We vote tomorrow and have hopes our Medical Coverage Initiative proposition will pass. Looks good at 18% lead. This Proposition 72 will legislate employers of over 50 or more emplyees to provide medical coverage to employees. 80% of cost to employer, 20%coming from employees. Take care, Ruth Ruth White san jose, ca us - Monday, November 1, 2004 11:48 AM CST Fran came down with Mike and Becky yesterday. We took the girls Trick or Treating at the Mall and on carousel rides. They had a great time. They also had a great time running around the house screaming with the dog this morning. We went Trick or Treating tonight and Mike M. collected over 20 pairs of glasses for the Lions club. He got candy too! Bad news was Mike had camped overnight on Friday and I had to pull off an attached (but not yet engorged)tick yesterday. Mike was not happy. Felicia McGinty Sandwich, MA USA - Sunday, October 31, 2004 7:11 PM CST My contract expired the end of September, but it looks possible I'll have a new contract (with a different manager) that would bring me to Seattle early next year - and I thought of you. PATSY PATSY DAHL <pastsyd@hotmail.com> SEATTLE, WA USA - Thursday, October 28, 2004 9:18 AM CDT Trusting that you survived your first chemo in reasonable form...too bad you can't have the radiation at the same time (like a manicure/pedicure) to get it all over with at once, but on the other hand you would no doubt prefer to have a few inches of anatomy that are relaxed and comfortable. Try to get hooked on a soap opera or CNN or Court TV so that you can zone out and make it through your procedures in fine style. Maybe you could send Christmas cards this year? That decision usually makes time fly by as mailing deadlines loom. The stamps come out in mid-October if you are feeling traditional. Signed up with your helpers but no word from them yet about scheduling me. Also left a message on your VM, don't know who's checking those for you. Oisin is also happy to keep you company (he's on your helper list too). Looking forward to seeing you soon. Have photos from Thailand and Nepal (the architecture is fabulous). Thinking of you daily! Sophie Keller <keltiawind@hotmail.com> Seattle, WA USA - Tuesday, October 26, 2004 4:13 AM CDT Eggplant here...visited Metropolitan Market, which is so upscale that it has fresh flowers in the restroom, and in addition to the usual Jello mixes, carries tiramisu mix, Muir Glen tomatoes ($$$), and a snack mix an employee warned me about because it was expensive and addictive (something with exotic nuts, bits of figs, and shards of candied orange rind). You must visit this place as your strength returns. Noticed that University Bookstore has a remarkable assortment of sugar-free stuff, including lemonade-flavored gum. I picked up a tiny sample of Equal and one of Splenda (fake sugars--Splenda is supposed to be "real" in the sense that it isn't destroyed by heat and can be used in baking.) Also noticed at supermarket: there are mini packages of yogurt made with whole milk (YoBaby, etc.) and some of the baby food jars now include things like pureed papaya. If feeling inspired, you could create some sort of parfait that would be easy to eat and attractive. I think a bit of food coloring and/or flavoring extract could be allowed. Maybe a drop of cognac? Well, maybe not. (Although Poppy Cannon [Canopener Cookbook] suggested adapting baby food as dessert sauce, or the pureed meat (with other stuff added) could be made into a cocktail spread.) Be of good cheer, because we are all thinking of you and beaming messages of strength, immunity, and perfect glucose into your head, and assorted connecting parts. The post office spewed it back but did not say postage was insufficient. Grumble. Courage as you await your therapies. There is a site by the American Cancer Society (google "chemotherapy") that lets you indicate your problem area and puts you on email list for updated research, etc. There is also a way to keep track of your appointments and links to support groups, etc. No word from you on your incision. I am picturing a viewing port (like a front-loading washing machine), with a tasteful tattoo that says "Pay per View". Or possibly a graceful swirl in the shape of a dollar sign. THe mind boggles. If no one has located a baby monitor for you to communicate to your gardener-helpers, how about a cowbell or bicycle horn? An alternative: you could be bundled in a sleeping bag, crowned with a couple of woolly hats, and set out in a lawn chair to supervise the aphid harvest, etc. Remember to think about spring bulbs--it is planting time! In your sojourns in physicians' offices, you will meet people who have the brains to fry bacon in butter...however, they can sometimes harbor bits of useful info such as the way to the cafeteria, the restroom, etc. We all have a purpose in this life: even the worst of us may serve as a horrible example. You are no doubt peering from time to time at the presidential campaign. I still maintain that Mr. Bush has the better tailor (although that will not influence my vote). Let us know what you are looking for in the way of literature: "Your Disease/Affliction and You" or "Escapist Literature Anthology" or whatever. I have been reading that music is sometimes supplied during radiation/chemo to help pass the time. You might want to inquire as to what you will hear (and wear headphones to block it out) or bring your own stuff. If wiped out by side effects, maybe you could become a foster mother to a box of orphaned kittens. Your job would be to stick a.bottle of kitten milk (available powdered from pet stores) into the kits' mouths and encourage feeding activity. As a human, you are exempted from the Mom Cat's method of stimulating the kits' bowels (but you can rub gently with a damp cotton ball). Just a thought; you'd keep your hands warm, have a boxful of little friends to talk to, and marvel as their little eyes open and they begin to scrabble about. Nancy Raynaud <Pattysullivan43@Yahoo.com> Seattle, WA USA - Monday, October 18, 2004 7:15 PM CDT Hi Anna, Keeping you in my thoughts! Just got back to Bangkok from a restful weekend on the Andaman Coast... Deirdre and I were two of only six guests at the little beach resort -- it's still the rainy season, the crowds start in about two weeks (and the prices skyrocket). We had a lovely bungalow with our own balcony, an enormous sunken tub, and a gorgeous walled-in-but-outdoor shower which tells you how warm the weather is. had the beach and pool essentially to ourselves... lots of time to read, journal, sleep and recover from our exhausting Seattle lives, *grin*. Now recharged and ready to finish our visit to Bangkok in style. We'll be home Wed Oct 20: I think I've said that...please call me and let me know what's doing with you. Congrats on increased exercise; letting your body know you want to keep using it is always a good plan. Let us know the philosophy of your diabetes cooking plan: I came across a recipe for a Sugarless Sugar Cookie which strikes me as Bad and Wrong. Maybe the Helpers can test various sugar-free items and vote on which are likely to pass taste tests. Or you could have a Strange Fruit party where people could bring cherimoyas, durian (well, maybe not durian) and lichees, etc. Patty and I celebrated .my 67th birthday at Ivar's downtown and I can recommend the main courses...they have become much more sophisticated over the years and have cut down on the deep fat mode quite a bit. Dessert is better taken elsewhere, though. .Be sure to set up a filing system for receipts, OTC meds, etc. so that you don't say later, "If I had only known that would be a deductible.., Don't know how you feel about support groups but they may be useful at least to start out with, in terms of pros and cons of diabetes gear, comparative prices, etc.. Nancy Raynaud <Pattysullivan43@yahoo.com> Seattle, WA USA - Friday, October 15, 2004 5:14 PM CDT Walking is good. I imagine you've seen or been told that the polls and general punditry all agree that, to varying degrees of margin, Kerry "won" all three debates, and is polling neck and neck with Bush again; Kerry was immensely strengthened by the debates. I by no means, unfortunately, would count on a sure win, but it's surely highly more likely and possible than it was just a couple of weeks ago. At the Wallingford Wurst Festival, there was voter registration; I got Mark to fill out a form, but now it's late enough that he has to take it in himself: no one else can take it in for him. But the office is open 9-5 on Sat., 'til the election. I got a neat fundraiser rain/sun umbrella at Bartell's: it's pink & white! Yes, you're on my mind a lot lately... I got together with a gal,Toy-we worked together in the 70's & 80's; she's 80 now- & made sweet red pepper relish; will make some antipasto next. Went to Riverdance: amazing! Talked some of my other friends into walking in the health walk rally this Sat. the 16th @ 10am from Volunteer Park to Group Health; employees' family health care benefits are at stake. Thinking you might want chauffeur service to your chemo appts, glad to provide this on my days off. Please phone me as of Oct 21 since I don't want to impose by calling you.... or email me at keltiawind@hotmail.com. Also Oisin says he's happy to help, feel free to call on him. Burned incense for you this AM at the temple of Reclining Buddha, an enormous and gorgeous gold statue. Sending positive thoughts your way every time you pop into my head(often). Deirdre sends her best as well. Hugs, we love you. Talk with you soon! Sophie Sophie Keller <keltiawind@hotmail.com> Seattle, WA USA - Wednesday, October 13, 2004 5:01 AM CDT Congratulations on your return to real meals, upright positions, etc. Re staple removal: I understand Crazy Glue (maybe medical grade) may be used as a patch. That might explain a lot of things...You will probably be given some kind of maintenance kit to use in swabbing the tum as it heals. Ask where you can get any needed refills (I found that surgeons tend to assume that the resources of a hospital are available at any RiteAid, including eye of newt, etc.. Get on your computer and find the new title for the former Fine Art of Recuperation, which has all kinds of helpful suggestions to speed your recovery. I hope by now you are sitting up most of the day, and "dressed" (maybe in sweats, but not pjs). You're allowed to go to bed early. When my father (in his 90s) was recovering from waking up paralyzed on one side after his "successful" carotid surgery, NW Hospital had him propped up in a nest of pillows so he didn't fall over learning to dress himself. It seemed awfully harsh treatment at the time, but eventually he was able to walk again, and only resorted to a wheelchair from about age 100 on up because surgeons thought replacing his arthritic hip joint would be too risky at that point. He carried on quite a correspondence, edited a book manuscript, and wrote a preface when he was 100 (meeting the publisher's deadline, which is more than I can say for some UW PhDs I've worked for). Enjoy the fall leaves as you trek to and from the doc. Be of good cheer! Eggplant Nancy Raynaud <Pattysullivan43@yahoo.com> Seattle, WA USA - Tuesday, October 12, 2004 6:55 PM CDT I'm reasonably sure, Anna, that you were too sleepy or blurry to watch or pay attention to the second Presidential debate. But I'm sure you'd like an account. Rather than transcribe one here, which would be inappropriate, I urge Karen (the blessed, the good person, the thanked) to please consider printing out this account, which I personally vouch is utterly faithful, completely truthful, and which you will enjoy. (Note to Karen: printing out any other entries from Fafblog, below or above, I urge you to consider, insofar as Anna won't have trouble laughing and loosing staples, or having other problems with. It is The Best News Source; a printout of the page graphics might be helpful, but probably not necessary.) Just remember, Anna: this is how the second debate went. Um, also: wuv. Gary Farber <Gary_farber@yahoo.com> boulder , CO - Tuesday, October 12, 2004 6:18 PM CDT YAY ANNA! And you can turn those discarded staples into links on a lovely chain, from which to hang the bronzed gallstones... or maybe not. Continue to grow strong & prosper, anam cara... Love & kisses, Anne Laurie (& Stuart) Anne Laurie Logan <mathom@gis.net> woburn, ma - Tuesday, October 12, 2004 1:08 AM CDT I ran into Arthur at the library yesterday and he told me about this site. Kate and I send best wishes for a speedy and thorough recovery. Take it easy and get well soon! David Levine <dlevine@spiritone.com> Portland, OR - Monday, October 11, 2004 3:44 PM CDT "We are looking forward to the staple removal on Wednesday (even though piercing is in, this is too much)." Tis' a silly question. The only major question amongst fans for the past hundred years is two staples or three. Gary Farber <Gary_farber@yahoo.com> boulder , co - Monday, October 11, 2004 3:16 PM CDT Hi Anna, Glad you're finally home. Hang in there. Kathy Kathy Willis <kathyatsfb@yahoo.com> - Monday, October 11, 2004 1:23 PM CDT Hi Anna, I cooked some baked Ziti. I don't know why I made 5 of them at once. I will freeze 4 of them. Maybe drop one off at John and Margaret's tommorow. In any case I wish I were there because I could pass one your way. Also I saw Emil last week, he is a good looking kid he is starting to talk. Love Mike and Ruth Mike Willis <maw64@yahoo.com> San Jose , CA USA - Saturday, October 9, 2004 9:13 PM CDT Dear Anna, i loved being able to know how you were progressing by checking the caringbridge website(checking 3-5 times a day). It was the only thing keeping me from bothering Seattle with phone calls. When you can, tell me a gift idea for you to assuage my guilt for not being there. Love, Felicia Felicia McGinty Sandwich, MA USA - Saturday, October 9, 2004 6:58 PM CDT Up, up, and move about! I fear that you will be found in a few weeks under a heap of gift books and piles of the New York Times! Or maybe Harlequin romances. Your medical chart probably reads: Patient's assessment of condition: can fog mirror if someone else holds it Physician's assessment: Can cartwheel down hall. May need temporary assistance with back flips Be sure all staples are removed, so you don't have to do the dance of the seven veils at airports. As you know, we all must shed shoes and jackets, and who knows what is next. Are you starting a new Tshirt collection? Single, seeking SugarTwin; Naturally Sweet; My Evil Twin is in the Jar on the Mantel...you know the drill. What about Halloween? Want to be protected from doorbelling droodles, or would that cheer you up? I notice virtually everything is available in sugar-free form, so you could give no-carb stuff (and eat any rejects). RiteAid has all sorts of interesting stuff at the moment, including magnetized pillboxes for the refrigerator door, wonderful squish pillows in assorted shapes and colors, etc. I met a diabetic acquaintance there and he showed me his special vitamins (there seem to be various brands). They're not just sugar free--check with your doc for more info. The new U Bookstore cafe has a bench seat in the back (and a bench-like thing surrounding the fireplace) so you may be able to have an outing and stretch out for a bit (cafe is not too crowded at midday). They have the usual goodies and Republic of Tea tea. Looking forward to bulletins on your progress! Eggplant Nancy Raynaud <Pattysullivan43@yahoo.com> Seattle, WA USA - Saturday, October 9, 2004 3:08 PM CDT It's another beautiful morning here; leaf blowers are the sound of the day. Hope your day is and will be as beautiful. (I think Kerry kicked Bush's ass last night, though statistically it might give only a mild, though critically important, boost; the funniest part was Bush coming out against the Dred Scott decision, on the basis that slavery wasn't into the Consitution.) Gary Farber <Gary_farber@yahoo.com> gary_ - Saturday, October 9, 2004 11:10 AM CDT Hi, Anna-- Mark Manning told me of your endometrial cancer and pointed me towards this site and guestbook. I join the others who've posted in wishing you a speedy (as possible) and complete (for sure) recovery. Thanks to all those on the ground in Seattle who are directly involved in helping you through this. I agree with Rich Coad's sentiment that we get to see you next year in San Francisco at Corflu and Potlatch. I agree with Mark Manning that Kerry should win. I hope you have plenty of stacked-up sick leave at work -- having hundreds of hours sure helped me in 1999 and 2001 when I had to take nine weeks off on each occasion -- and good health insurance, too, so you don't have to sweat it financially and can concentrate on healing. Please pull through this! Love, Robert Robert Lichtman <robertlichtman@yahoo.com> Glen Ellen, CA USA - Friday, October 8, 2004 11:44 PM CDT Sleep tight. Feel better. Don't let the bedbugs bite. There's a beautiful autumnal tree in front of my building, just a few feet from my balcony on the third floor, I wish you could see. The lower leaves are all yellowish, rising to reddish on top. My neighbor John calls it a fire tree, with that look. You should see how pretty it, and all the other trees of October look here, framed by our own mountains of the Front Range, no more beautiful than the Olympics and Cascades, but no less, and much closer. (Which isn't great when the fires come within hundreds of feet of the edge of town, but never mind that.) Sleep tight. Wake up nice. Gary Farber <Gary_farber@yahoo.com> - Friday, October 8, 2004 10:59 PM CDT Anna, I am praying every night that you will do well. We love you and we need you in the world. Be healthy! Please! Love, Elinor and Buz (Elinor wrote first, but her sentiments go for me too. We need you healthy!--Buz) F. M. and Elinor Busby <fmbusby001@aol.com ebusby@aol.com> Seattle, WA USA - Friday, October 8, 2004 4:47 PM CDT Of course, knowing how much Anna loves to have pictures taken of her self, there really should be a photo posted every day! ;-} love, gf Gary Farber <gary_farber@yahoo.com> Boulder, CO - Friday, October 8, 2004 12:02 AM CDT Anna, got the message earlier this week. Sympathies. Heal well. Randolph Fritz <randolph@panix.com> Portland, OR USA - Friday, October 8, 2004 2:41 AM CDT Anna, Just received an e-mail from Mark. My gosh there you were in the hospital and we never heard until today. Glad that your brother is able to be here awhile for you. I'll sign up on the 'go for' help list. Do you have a cell phone? A needed item when you start going to the hospital daily. At least the chemo treatment isn't as rough as it once was. Radiation is OK, just takes time. As to meals maybe they can post a listing of what you both can and like to eat! Hang in there, everyone is pulling for you. Wrai and Carol Ballard <Basingstke@aol.com> Seattle, WA - Friday, October 8, 2004 1:46 AM CDT Hi, Anna! I just sorted through a bunch of email that I hadn't looked at since getting back from Morocco a few days ago, and got poleaxed by the news of your illness. I can't wait till I hear you're back in the pink 100%. Nothing would make me happier (though, admittedly, seeing the Shrub defeated in a landslide wouldn't exactly be a *bad* thing). All my best wishes for your speedy and complete recovery. If my prayers/meditations/wishes worked instantly & perfectly, you'd be out dancin' by now. And blessings on Karen Seymour & Jane Hawkins for helping you see this all through. I always knew those two were saints, and this proves it yet again. Oh, and I'll pass the word about your situation on to the SAPS tonight. Much love, Mark Mark Manning <TandMark@aol.com> Seattle, WA USA - Thursday, October 7, 2004 10:54 PM CDT Hi, Anna! Just wanted to let you know you're very much on my mind... I just got caught up reading all the entries to you...Wow! You've got a lot of supportive friends; but that's not really a surprise! They've shared a lot of good ideas: get out the vote--someone to cover your voting area for you; do you need an absentee ballot? etc.; I'll get in touch with Jane. Love & best wishes, Patsy PS: Jokes on me; I can't remember my email password!!!!!!!!!!! Patsy Dahl Seattle, WA USA - Thursday, October 7, 2004 10:51 AM CDT Morning wish of love; that's the love I have for you. You are the prettiest and smartist and most interesting person I've ever known. I'll start on a morning joke soon. Or whatever is required. bad news on Bush. You ask, we deliver. Topics open. Wake up and enjoy the morning sweetly, dear. Other stuff later. Enjoy the beautiful sun of the morning I hope you can see out of your morning. Gary Farber <Gary_farber@yahoo.com> boulder, - Thursday, October 7, 2004 8:52 AM CDT Anna, Ken Josenhans just emailed me that you were ill. I'm very sorry & wish I was near enough to you to be of help, but I will be thinking of you & hoping for your speedy recovery. Love, Jon (Hobbit) Jon Caulkett <j.caulkett@att.net> Battle Creek, MI - Wednesday, October 6, 2004 11:46 PM CDT Hey Anna, both Walt and Marion call daily and that is a big deal to get a bit of information when we are thinking of you. This site has been great at letting us know what you are doing, bet you never dreamt so many folks would know of your recovery body rumblings! Eeek- tough for a modest Woman as yourself but we all so want to be helpful! We hear you may go to Karen's home today and hope the transition goes smoothly for you. Gentle hugs, Ruth and Mike Mike Willis & Ruth san jose, ca - Wednesday, October 6, 2004 9:39 PM CDT Dear Anna, I'm sending gentle hugs and healing thoughts to you from all of us at Quack Cottage (Annie, Howard, the kitties, and of course me). Take things slow and easy...I think I'm safe in saying that your spot in the 'Nage will be there for you whenever you can write. Love, Paula Paula Sigman Lowery <paula@howardlowery.com> Glendale, CA United States - Wednesday, October 6, 2004 9:25 PM CDT Hi Pumpkin! While your house is temporarily empty, would you like stuff like carpet cleaning done (so chemical fumes vanish before you're back). And has someone investigated the refrigerator for alien life forms? (I once spent a week in San Francisco and returned to find that the refrigerator had somehow become unplugged before I left. Eeeuw.) Also, check stock of light bulbs, especially whatever the bath and kitchen use (heat lamp? long-life bulbs?) As your energy permits, besides books on the wish list, do you need a reclining chair or chair with ottoman for comfortable reading? Better reading lamp? Cozy throw, so you can sit near a window (maybe watching a bird feeder) as a change of pace and scene? Any appliances that will make cooking easier? Blender, food processor, microwave? Don't know how recently the diabetes was discovered, but perhaps someone can sift out the cupboards and sort any high-sugar stuff to a "helpers' dinner shelf" or off to a food bank. I know grapefruit juice is supposed to boost the action of some medications and assume that someone is keeping track of similar problems and drug interactions. Care crew: is there a Fun File started, with ideas on things Anna can do despite reduced energy (when she's a bit more healed). Nancy Raynaud <Patriciasullivan43@yahoo.com> Seattle, WA USA - Wednesday, October 6, 2004 5:54 PM CDT Hi Anna, Could you have Walter call me? I have some books to send to Anna on the subject of Diabetes Control. Some Cookbooks and meal planning books. Could Walter call my cell phone? Thanks, Frances - Wednesday, October 6, 2004 4:14 PM CDT Best of luck. (You don't know me; I read Mr. Farber's site.) Sumana CA USA - Wednesday, October 6, 2004 4:02 PM CDT Here's for a good Wednesday; it's all rainy here in Colorado, as it has been for several days. I'd like to suggest that perhaps Jane, or someone else local whom Anna will be talking to, bit by bit as things come to mind, begin making up a Wish List of books Anna doesn't have and would like to read; then we can coordinate volunteers sending one and only one copy. (I'd suggest the same thing for videos and DVDs, but knows she doesn't watch those much, though if she has any druthers, obviously those should be added to.) I'd be happy to coordinate finding volunteers and getting the books sent, if someone who talks with Anna can start putting together the Wish List. I also suggest adding a space for people to add suggestions on the "Helpers' Page," rather than here, as that would be more appropriate. I'd send a hug, but we don't want any squishy insides falling out. Small kiss on forehead instead. Gary Farber <(Temporarily) gary_farber@yahoo.com> Boulder, CO - Wednesday, October 6, 2004 2:49 PM CDT Hi Anna! I know we haven't talked or seen each other in many years, but I wish you a swift healing and return to your normal feisty self. Rebecca Lesses <rlesses@ithaca.edu> Ithaca, NY 14850 - Tuesday, October 5, 2004 11:15 PM CDT Continued good wishes. Take it very easy. D. Potter Oakland, CA United States - Tuesday, October 5, 2004 10:57 AM CDT Anna --- Just heard due to email from Kate Shaefer. And I see that you're already up and around and etc. in the hospital. Great! I was on a liquid diet in the hospital for 11 days ten years ago, now. I feel your pain... Good vibes in your direction. Kathy and I, and Emma, and Michael, and Cady, and Fat Bastard the cat, and Maxwell our beagle, all send love your way. Tim Kyger <TimBKyger@aol.com> Burke, VA USA - Tuesday, October 5, 2004 9:11 AM CDT Dear Anna, Hi Cutie, So today is Tuesday. From the abdomnal surgurey that I have had, I would like to give you one small piece of advice. No matter how tempting it is to avoid sitting up, don't try to drink while lying flat on your back. I tried it and nearly drowned! But I sat up right quick and, and, well nothing disastrous after all. Also you may want to avoid funny movies. I went to one two weeks after surgury, laughed until I ..., well I really don't want to print what happened but fortunately there was a bathroom close by. Speaking of which is it SAFE to read Terry Pratchett until your stiches have healed? The more you shouldn't laugh out loud, the more you will! Anyway, we hope you will let us know when we can call. frances Wellesley, ma - Tuesday, October 5, 2004 7:39 AM CDT I come from Gary Farber's site to wish you a full and speedy recovery. I do not know you or Gary. But I was very sick once, and the knowlege that people I didn't know, connected to me by the thinnest of threads, were wishing me well through their prayers and thoughts gave me a sense of solaace and strength that I hope I may share with you. Phil Drysdale Dublin, CA USA - Tuesday, October 5, 2004 3:23 AM CDT Anna: I'm inspired by the message that the kids in San Francisco's Woodside Juvenile Detention Center sent to Jerry Garcia, when he got sick in the '80s. "Garcia. Get well, soon, or we'll mug ya." Hoping to see you at Potlatch. Lenny Bailes <lennyb@speakeasy.net> San Francisco, CA USA - Tuesday, October 5, 2004 2:41 AM CDT Hi Anna, Gary sent me here--he's an awesome dude and he sure does like you. He said to entertain you, ummm--I just finished _Going Postal_ yesterday, loving every minute. At Noreascon this year, somebody bought Terry Pratchett's copy for $300; I had to sit on my hands to keep from bidding. I overheard him tell someone his favorite of all his books was Wee Free Men; I'll have to read that one again. Keep on keeping on, and very best wishes from me. Betsy Devine <bdevine@hotnospammail.com> Cambridge, MA USA - Monday, October 4, 2004 10:15 PM CDT Hello, Anna! Wishing you a speedy recovery to the best of health. Yvonne V. Richardson <yvonnerichard@seanet.com> Bellevue, WA USA - Monday, October 4, 2004 10:06 PM CDT Hey Anna-- Gary says you're great, so it must be true in spades!! We're all praying for you here in NJ, and we've put you in our church's Prayer Circle--just know that we're all in your corner. You gotta get better in time for the Kerry inauguration! Larry Hartzell Howell, NJ - Monday, October 4, 2004 9:36 PM CDT To Karen & Dick Seymour, Jane Hawkins, Marion White, and all you other Seattle-based angels: Thank you, THANK YOU, for doing for Anna what those of us on the wrong side of the continent (or the world) can only fret about! I'm sure you are already aware that letting those of us far from the action know what we can & can't do for Anna -- in other words, keeping us from making pests of ourselves & wearing Anna down when she least needs the stress, just because we feel we HAVE to do SOMETHING -- is not the least of your good works. Blessings to you & best wishes for continued & uneventful Anna-improvement... Thanks once more, Anne Laurie Anne Laurie Logan <mathom@gis.net> Woburn, MA - Monday, October 4, 2004 7:15 PM CDT Hey, Anna - take care of yourself. Word is getting around, so I hope this is a peaceful way of getting messages. Berni and I took a walk through our neighborhood yesterday to count the Kerry/Edwards signs and hiss quietly at the ones for the other guy. Thinking of you! David Bratman <dbratman@earthlink.net> - Monday, October 4, 2004 5:27 PM CDT Hi, Anna, I've never met you, but, as Gary's friend, I'll bet you're terrific. I'm taking Gary to make sure he's registered to vote today -- I hope that you get 'all better' soon -- and let the KERRY-times roll! Carroll Harris <wonderweather@aol.com> Boulder, CO USA - Monday, October 4, 2004 2:43 PM CDT Dear Anna: Although we have only had opportunities to meet briefly, I know how much your friendship means to my friend Nancy Raynaud. Glancing through your guestbook, it is apparent how blessed you are in your many friendships. May the love and support of all these wonderful-sounding people bouy you up, Anna. I had uterine cancer surgery in August, 1991. While I did not have to undergo the follow up treatment you are anticipating, I just want to let you know that I am one of the fortunate people who has enjoyed thirteen cancer-free years following surgery. My most sincere best wishes to you for a complete and trouble-free recovery and rapid return to all the persons and activities that bless your life. Sandy Courtney (former U. W. colleague of Nancy's) p. s. I'll do my best in the get out the vote effort; it appears were are of the same persuasion about the importance of this election. Sandra Courtney <sctravel@hotmail.com> Edgewood, Wa USA - Monday, October 4, 2004 2:17 PM CDT Hope you recover swiftly. Howard Davidson <hld@sun.com> - Monday, October 4, 2004 12:52 AM CDT I came from Gary's site. Best wishes for a speedy and good recovery, with the help and love of your many friends and family. Get well, and look forward to a new President! Krishna R. - Monday, October 4, 2004 11:55 AM CDT Anna, Got directed here by Gary Farber. We have never met but any fan of Pratchett and Steeleye Span is bound to be an intelligent, witty and alltogether splendid person. Good luck and best wishes for your recovery. Jim Braiden Jim Braiden <maidayireland@eircom.net> Clones, Mon Ireland - Monday, October 4, 2004 11:25 AM CDT Hi Cuz! We have you in our thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. Be sure to let everyone else take care of you and concentrate on lot's of rest and the things you enjoy like reading! Valerie, Ray, Heather & Nicole Thrower <vthrower@gac.edu> St Peter, MN USA - Monday, October 4, 2004 10:50 AM CDT Gary still here, thinking of you as he wakes up, and as he goes to sleep, and every moment in between. Sending good thoughts. I think I can arrange, believe it or not, to fly up and stay for a while, paying for myself, asking for nothing, if someone could just donate crash space (sporadic online access would be good but not essential), and I could be a fulltime caretaker/aid/getter, if that would help. Should be able to do this for up to a few weeks. Let me know. Let me know anything else specific I can do from afar while I think on things on my own. When you watch the firefly episodes, don't forget to watch them a second time with the audio commentaries; they're found under the "language selection" options on certain episodes, with no other clue. I particularly recommend those for the pilot opening episode, by Joss Whedon and Nathan Fillion (who plays Mal -- the movie is currently in production, you know!); very funny. At one point Nathan indignantly tells Joss "you can't take the sky from me, you know!" (from the theme song Joss wrote). The second ep, "The Train Job," with Fillion and the actor who played the pilot is also quite funny in their commentary. All around grand stuff; I'm glad we'll have the movie, but still mad not having the show continuing when there's so much junk on tv instead, including dreadful sf such as "Andromeda." But I digress. I remember the aftermath of tube withdrawal, but this, too, you'll pardon the expression, will pass in time, and really get not bad at all fairly shortly. It's just the first couple of days or so that it's discomfortable. And, yes, let them give you a good supply of pain drugs to take home; it's better and okay to be fuzzy and only mildly uncomfortable for a few days than to be clearer and in considerable pain and major discomfort. Honest! Don't hesitate to ask them for more if it will help! This won't turn you into a raving addict with a long-term need. Really! Okay, more later, bye now. Gary Farber <temporaryily: gary_farber@hotmail.com> Boulder, co - Monday, October 4, 2004 7:54 AM CDT My thoughts and prayers are with you and hopes for swift and full recovery. Gail Weiss <gbweiss@iname.com> Hartsdale, NY USA - Monday, October 4, 2004 7:48 AM CDT Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Anna. I missed seeing you at Noreascon but I hope you will be in SF for Corflu and Potlatch feeling great and having fun. Rich Coad - Monday, October 4, 2004 7:18 AM CDT Dear Anna: Yoiks! When you take off for sick leave, you sure don't fool around. Am very sorry to know about the cancer, but am hoping that you recover swiftly, easily, and exceptionally well. You have to, after all: probably it's too late to request an absentee ballot for the November election, so you have no choice but to walk down to the polling place and vote da bum out in person! ;-) Best of luck to you, and best of good wishes from me. --John John Hopfner <hopfnerj@earthlink.net> Warren, MI USA - Monday, October 4, 2004 7:16 AM CDT Prayers for your recovery and well-being, Anna. This world wants you in it. Patrick Nielsen Hayden <pnh@panix.com> Brooklyn, NY USA - Monday, October 4, 2004 6:08 AM CDT Hello, Anna, This note is largely directed at the many people who care about you and wish to help. What we most want is a magic wand to make it all go away, but eBay doesn't offer the real thing. Failing that, many of us would count it a favor if we could do something useful for you. I've put up the start of pages to help us know what we can do for you without stepping all over each other -- or you! Anna's Helpers If anyone reading this note wishes to check them out that'd be great. I did them in a hurry so they are simple and only partly functional. I hope to make improvements Monday night. Let me know if you run into broken or boneheaded stuff! Jane Hawkins (206-634-3828) <jhawk@oz.net> Seattle, WA USA - Monday, October 4, 2004 4:43 AM CDT Anna, hope you're feeling better soon. We were all pretty freaked out to hear about it and you've got good wishes coming to you from all over the world now. Get better, and be assured that neither time nor distance change love that was always yours. No; of course I don't 'only' hope that. I also hope for the speediest, Olympic legend-making, Guinness Book Of Records-busting return to health. Which is an actual word, unlike 'hot-th', which, as I suspect you have guessed, I made up. PATSY DAHL <patsyd161952@hotmail.com> SEATTLE, WA USA - Wednesday, September 29, 2004 10:01 AM CDT Hi, Anna, Just a few hours before your surgery as I'm writing this now (3am Wednesday). I'm praying in my atheistic way. "Clean margins" is the mantra. I hear they may wind up pounding you pretty hard with chemo and/or radiation afterwards. Maybe I or someone else could collect names of folks who'd like to help and then organize them to bring you and your brother meals or groceries or do other chores. Ten or fifteen people contributing a few hours a week can make a lot of difference without calling on any one person very hard. A suggestion to whoever might take this on: Write down the name of *every* person who offers to help, even if you have nothing in mind for them right now. In my experience, those people aren't just performing a social ritual, they are downright *grateful* if someone calls up later and offers them a way to help. Take care, Jane Jane Hawkins <jhawk@oz.net> Seattle, WA USA - Wednesday, September 29, 2004 5:17 AM CDT Hi Anna, Hope you brought some interesting books. Ask the nurse for a dark mask so you can sleep well. And it's good to have a set of earplugs too, if someone can get them for you.
