Caleb's Web Page On January 28, 2005, Caleb was hospitalized with low blood counts. We found out on February 3 that he had AML M7, with a chromosomal translocation that made it a rare and high-risk form of leukemia. He went into a complete remission after his first round of chemotherapy, and after a second round of chemo, he was admitted to Duke University Medical Center for a bone marrow transplant. His sister, Ciara, was a 6/6 HLA match, so she was his donor. Caleb was hospitalized at Duke on 5/9 and had his transplant on 5/19. He did exceptionally well throughout transplant, and was discharged on 6/14. We finally were able to bring him home to VA on 7/29. Caleb is such a blessing to us and we are praying that the cancer is gone for good!
Journal
Tuesday, May 29, 2007 11:52 AM CDT We celebrated Caleb's 2nd transplant anniversary on the 19th of May and he had his annual check-up at Duke on 5/21. So far, so good. His CBC was "textbook normal," his t-cells are average to above average, and his blood continues to be all female. Caleb is an active little boy who even is growing normally - his height and weight are at the 60th percentile. From saying only 3-4 words last July, Caleb has increased his vocabulary to the point that he can communicate his needs fairly well. While Nick, Ciara, and I are the only ones who can consistently understand his understand what he's saying, he has made incredible progress. He even can identify numbers and several letters. Caleb has a great smile and a good sense of humor. The whole cancer experience was a nightmare, but we just appreciate our kids more because of it.
