God sent to me an angel;
it had a broken wing,
I bent my head and wondered,
"How could God do such a thing?"

When I asked the Father
why he sent this child to me
the answer was forthcoming,
He said, "Listen and you will see."

My children are all precious,
and none is like the rest.
Each one to me is special,
and the least is as the best.

"I send each one from Heaven
and I place it in the care
of those who know my mercy,
those with love to spare.

Sometimes I take them back again,
sometimes I let them stay.
No matter what may happen,
I am never far away.

So if you find an angel
and you don't know what to do,
remember I am with you,
love is all I ask of you.

Korbin Blaine Hicks

Born: June 5, 2004

Weight: 7 pounds 4 1/2 ounces Length: 19 1/2 inches

Little Korbin is a very special little boy. He has the prettiest blue eyes and soft blonde hair, and he can wrap you around his little finger in a second. I know he won my heart right from the start.

He is my GREAT grandson, the son of my 18 year old granddaughter Amber and Cody Hicks. He has a lot of family and many people who love him so much including his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was born on June 5, 2004 (on my sister's birthday) and my sister and I arrived at the hospital just in time to hear his first cry. The hall was lined up with family and friends outside Amber's room, wanting to get their first peek. Amber and Cody wanted some time right after his birth to be with him alone, just the three of them (understandably), so it was almost an hour before Cody finally came out of the room carrying his new son to the newborn nursery. He stopped right outside the door and let us see the baby. FIRST IMPRESSION: He is beautiful!! We all agreed he was the prettiest baby in the nursery and couldn't stay away from the nursery window. Ten tiny fingers, ten tiny toes; he was perfect in every way. We watched as the nurse checked him from head to toe. He was awake, alert and passed all tests with flying colors.

Amber had been having routine sonograms so we had known for several months that he was going to be a little boy and that his name was Korbin Blaine. Isn't it funny how you can love someone so much even before they are born?

His first three months were perfect although he did seem to be a little colicky. At around that time his mom changed his formula and he became less fussy. We aren't sure if it was the formula change or the end of a "three month" period of colic. At any rate, Korbin felt much better!!

... A short time later the world came crashing down around us.He was now three months old and his head was still somewhat wobbly, he hadn't rolled over yet (from back or stomach, and then we started to noticed that he wasn't moving his legs and kicking like most babies his age. Another thing that Amber and Cody had noticed was than he had a curvature of his spine.

His pediatrician said at first that this wasn't "normal" but it wasn't "abnormal" either. He wanted to give it a couple of weeks to see if he improved (which he didn't), and at this point he was referred to a pediatric neurologist at Children's Medical Center, Dallas, Texas.

It took two weeks to get all of the tests back, and the news was bad. He had spinal muscular atrophy and would never be able to walk, and finally we learned that he would probably not even live past one year old.

The pediatrician talked to Amber and Cody yesterday when they took him in for his baby shots. They have to make a decision as to whether or not they want to have him intubated and on a ventilator when that time comes and whether or not they would want a feeding tube. That is a lot of responsibility for anyone, especially for such young parents, but they love their little boy with all their hearts and I trust they will make the best decisions for Korbin. They are still just kids themselves in a lot of ways, but when it comes to Korbin, they are "all grown up".

Korbin will celebrate his first Christmas in a week and possibly his last. My heart is breaking ... not only for only him but for Amber and Cody and for my daughter, Kristi (Korbin's gammaw). They are all being strong for each other and for Korbin and if they can do that, then surely so can I. They are doing such a great job with him and I am so proud of them all!

HEAVEN BOUND
May 23, 2005

An angel in the book of life,
wrote down our baby’s birth
and whispered as she closed the book ~
“too beautiful for earth”

Cradled for moments,
Loved forever.
Always cherished,
Forgotten? Never!

In life we loved you dearly,
In death we love you still.
In our hearts, you hold a place
that no one will ever fill

TEARS IN HEAVEN

When God sends forth a tiny soul
to learn the ways of Earth
A mother's love is waiting here
We call this wonder birth

When God calls home a tiny soul
And stills a fleeting breath
A Father's love is waiting here
This too is birth, not death
