Baylie,
You don't know me, but I have spoken to your mom before. I came across your website when I was researching Chiari. I have Chiari Malformation type I too. I had a decompression surgery in '07. I cannot imagine going through what you have gone through with 11 surgeries and being so young. I have your race to a million t-shirt and your obama t shirt and some bracelets! They are beautiful and I wear them all the time! I have one of your ribbons on my car too! I think you are such a brave and courageous person and though you are very young, you teach so many of us older folks about faith and how to be strong. Thank you for being "you" and helping me. I will aways tell people about you, and I will tell them about your website to help you raise more money!

Baylie dear, I understand this roller coaster ride that you have been riding for nearly 9 years, as I was diagnosed with a Chiari Malformation in 2006. I had a successful surgery on August 6th, 2007, when I was 11 years old and now today, I am fully healed, and I can do so much more. I am a star in softball, basketball, performing musicals on stage, cross country, and I feel confident all the time! My prayers are with you that you will feel better, and become more strong as the days go by.
I love you dear!

Hello all, my name is Tiffany & I am almost 30 years old. I just stumbled upon this site checking on the risks for flying with a VP Shunt & Arnold Chiari. I want to go to Florida to visit my brother for a long weekend.
I was diagnosed with Psuedotumor Cerebri in 1999 where they put in a lumbar shunt. I told that Neurosurgeon it wasn't working after about 6 years & he said everything was fine, and he wanted me to see a Pshyciatrist. I saw one & they said I was perfectly normal other than being frustrated & giving the situation a little depressed.
I then went to my Neurologist (who is now retired) & she sent me to The Cleveland Clinic. There is where they found out the lumbar shunt wasn't working & I was actually losing most of my parifial vision, and thats when they also found out I have Arnold Chiari Malformation. They ended up closing off my lumbar shunt(but left it in me) & put in a programable Ventrical shunt. We are still trying to get the VP shunt regulated after 1 1/2 years & no luck so far. We started at the highest setting of 300 & now I am down to 90 & still have elevated pressure behind my eyes, as well as excruciating, debelitating headaaches, shooting pains in head, eye pains, & pretty much whole body pain, poor balance, ringing in my ears & weakness. I can barely get out of bed somedays.
I have no health insurance & it has been a strugle to find a family doctor to help control my pain so I can semi function on a daily bases & who will work out a payment plan for me so I can continue to work part time & help support my mom. A Pain Management doctor is out of the question considering their charges & how long it takes to get into them.
On September 11, 2008 my dad suffered a ruptured anurysm & 3 strokes. He can walk & talk ok with help but will never be able to come home. He has no short term memory & has to have constant supervision. He was our provider, & we were not prepared for any of this. It just goes to show you how short & precious life is.
I was also denied disability twice, their resoning was I am not disabled enough, even with all the reports from all my doctors & proof of all 20 surgeries I have had... 2 for Psuedo Tumor - 1 for Arnold Chiari - 1 for Crhons Disease -9 laproscopic surgeries for Endometriosis & Cycst on my ovaries, fallopian tubes & Uterus - 2 lumps in my left breast removed - appendectomy -tonsilectomy - hysterectomy, left nee surgery & finaly my gallbladder removed.
I feel so lost sometimes, especially when I cannot find a good doctor who beleieves me when I say how much pain I am in & how I know there is something wrong with my body. I have a good docotor in Cleveland who is my Neaurosurgeon & he adjustments my shunt for me, but driving 4 hrs one way not to see him but his nurse only for a 5 min office visit that cost $250.00 is getting expensive. I tried to get back into a doctor around where I live but they are all affiliated together & because I left my origianl Neurosurgeon, no one else will see me cause they don't want to step on his toes.
I feel like I'm at the end of my rope & if there is nayone out there who can help or offer some advice or would just like to talk plese feel free to contact me.
Sorry for the novel I wrote, but I needed to vent to somone who is going through this.
God Bless & take care. I will be praying for all of you.

Hi! We just wanted to pop onto your site again to say hello and send well wishes your way.
I have to tell you, I just heard that President-elect Obama has asked Dr. Gupta, a neurosurgeon (seen on CNN too) to be Surgeon General.
This may be our prayers being answered. All I can think about is that photo of Baylie and then Senator Obama speaking!

Baylie,
I found your site while searching Comers site for my son. He was diagnosed with a rare syndrome that they don't have any answers to why, Moyamoya syndrome. His doctor is Dr. Frim too. The picture you have with Dr. Kahana is priceless. We love her too. She gave my son, Cash, his first taste of chocolate! I am very impressed with your accomplishments with the braclets, t-shirts, and magnantes. It has given me some ideas for helping Dr. Frim raise funds for moyamoya research. Can I borrow your ideas? My son also has a page here on caringbridge. You can visit it under cashharpp I will pray for your health and your determination. You are a very special girl. But you knew that, right? God bless you!
Sincerely,
Abbe Harpp

Hi Baylie,
I found your site from a post on Riley's CB, and as I read your journal, I see that you are also from Indiana!! I have two children, my 9 y.o. son Keegan had his decompression in June of this year, and my 11 y.o. daughter Kaylee had hers also on Dec. 8th.

I'm really sorry you had to be in the hospital on Christmas, but I'm glad you are home now. I know how rotten those incision infections can make you feel, Keegan's got infected too. I'll be praying for a smooth recovery for you from here forward :)

Baylie, I am hoping you are doing better and will be out of the hospital soon. Chicago was covered in ice this morning and luckily the shuttle bus was running to take me to Comer's. THe only way to get down the driveway at RMH was to slowly slide down the drive while hanging onto the fence posts. I am sure I looked really funny. My daughter Emily is in the hospital too, so I understand you being sad at Christmas. It was wonderful that you could be with your sisters. Please tell your mom hi for me and hope you are home soon.

Baylie, I am so sorry to hear that you have so much pain. I was at the hospital on Wednesday with another Caring Bridge family, Conor Morrissey. Conor had grids placed for epilepsy resection surgery. He is in the PICU and will be there for another 7-10- days. He is in alot of pain also and he just got his PCA pump. I am hoping to get to visit him on Sunday. I know that Emily is not feeling well either. I am praying that things improve for all of the Caring Bridge families.

We are so glad your surgery went well! You are an amazing girl. Take some time off to enjoy the holidays, before you get back to work. Tell your Grandma to leave her Christmas lights on until 9:30. We voted for her as a finalist last year, but her lights went out too early on the big judging night. Many people think they saw snow yesterday in JV. I think it was sleet, but everyone enjoyed it falling through the sky. The girls came home with snowballs last night. They had scraped the snow off of the cars to make them.

Merry Christmas!

Hi Baylie, I hope you are feeling better after your surgery. You don't know me but I check up on you via your website every now and then. My son Matthew (age 6) has chiari. He was decompressed 3 years ago and has been doing well since then. I count my blessings every day that he feels good. Me and my family appreciate all you do to raise money and awareness for chiari. You are a champion and your strength helps all of us effected by chiari. Hope you recover quickly in time for all the holiday fun.

Well said Tressie! I was frustrated too when my VP shunt quit after 10 months but I found out it was because the tubing got stuck in scar tissue in my abdomen. Last October 29th was 1 year since my last shunt surgery and I'm doing well. Best of luck to Baylie. I will be praying.

Hey Miss Baylie. I hope you are having a fantastic day. We are here in first grade. It's the Monday after our Thanksgiving break and we are trying to make it through the long day. We are used to shopping and eating lunch out and not having to do school work. Maybe by Tuesday we will be back in the groove. Have a wonderful day. I really enjoy reading all your cool entries.

Hang in there, Baylie. I have been checking your site and rooting for you ever since I read about you in the Chicago Sun-Times a few years back. There are a lot of very smart people at the University of Chicago Hospital (I go to a doctor there myself), and I'm sure Dr. Frim is one of the smartest. I'm also a teacher so I know how hard it must be for you to concentrate on school work when you're in pain. But you are stronger and braver than most grownups I know and I'm sure Dr. Frim will try to make things a little easier for you. I'm also not too far from Indiana so I'll wave to you across the border! :)

Hi,
I have two children with chiari. My son Will who is 8 has a vp shunt and had a decompression two years ago Oct2. He too has had the non stop eye blinking...I always wondered if that had to do withhis chiari. Then we have our little Lily sho is just 9 months old. We found out she had hydro about 6 weeks ago and she had a vp shunt placed 4 weeks ago yesterday. She has hhad continuous problems in and out of Hopkins since. She started doing weird head bobbing 4 days after surgery...her eeg is noprmal but these have evolved that they are now her head/neck /eyes and trunk jerking and out of control. they did an mro and she has a small chiari too but we can not figure out what is happening and we feel so helpless. I hope your Baylie is doing better

Perhaps you all remember us . . . "Nemo" and company from Louisville, KY. We made the paper bow-ties with you (you still have his picture posted on your website). Nehemiah is doing great and we are planning a check-up with Dr. Frim sometime after January. He has very few symptoms, but the last time we looked, the syringomyelia was still there. Anyway, we are planning on doing what we can to support your race to 1 million. Look for an order from us soon. We think of you often and Nehemiah has nearly worn out his "Brain surgery" shirt which garners comments everytime he wears it. God bless you and keep running the race! Hi Baylie,
Our town newspaper wrote an article about Cristina's church making a new bedroom for her earlier this summer. Cristina talked about you and the wonderful work you've done raising money to help people with chiari and how great it was you could do that. Now everybody in Yelm Washington knows your name! Quite a few people even ask about you.

Hey Miss. Baylie! You missed one heck of a storm this weekend. Be glad you are up north. Most of the village got power back last night, but we still have to boil water for another day or so. The girls and I are headed to Denver to visit a friend for the weekend, since we don't have school. Speaking of school you certainly wouldn't recognize it. From the cafeteria to the First/Third grade rooms is all gone. It is probably a giant mud hole right now, too. The building is gone from construction, not the storm. Hang in there!!!

I'm so sorry you are feeling bad. I so want you to feel better. I have Chiari too, but I don't have a shunt and have had two surgeries for it. There is hope and a lot of research. You have made a lot of that research happen. I owe you big time! By the way, everybody up here in Madison (at least the people I call MY friends) totally loves the Obama shirt!! Everybody asks about it. So, give Dr. Frim another chance because he is really smart and he really cares about you! I know how frustrating it is. Hi Baylie,
I have checked your web site a couple of times. My daughter Rylee, who is four years old, was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation in April of 2008. She will be having surgery in Chicago at the end of this month. We are happy that some one is raising awareness about this disease. We are doing our part in east Tennessee.
Good Luck with your adventures. Rylee will be wearing her T-shirt proudly after surgery.

Hi Baylie,
I believe I have introduced myself a while ago. My 22 month old daughter also has Chiari and we are being honored at a fundraising event this weekend for Mylee. All proceeds are going to both ASAP and Miracle wish for Chiari. We have several other kiddos who sent me pictures of them to share with a large crowd at a car racing event in our home town in Arizona. I have a picture of you with your friend Christina S. I would also love to have a picture of by yourself. I hope you don't mind but I have copied the one of you wearing your shirt that is for sale. I am hoping this might bring you some more sales too....Let me know immediately if this is not something you would like for me to use. The event will be held on Saturday, June 21st. I will be posting the "faces of Chiari poster I am putting together hopefully on Friday.

Hoping you are doing well at the moment and PAIN FREE!!

Thank you in advance!!

You are an amazing little girl with a Big disease but a bigger heart and dreams. Don't ever give up because you are making all of your dreams come true! I have had VP, LP, shunts, decompression surgery, IH, Chiari and optic nerve surgery. IT isn't fun but it makes us special and we see the world different than most people, even though we have the pain and suffering we have those good days we pray for. I pray that you have a life full of painfree day's and that your efforts continue to grow. I shall keep you in my prayers and am totally amazed at how many wonderful ideas you have for fund raising. You are a beautiful person inside and out and a brave little girl. Your family is very brave too and I am glad you enjoyed your vacation and hope you continue to improve. I am going to keep checking on this website to see how your doing and will make a purchase. I am going to send it along to my friends hoping they do the same! Keep Smiling and Keep up the Amazing work! It is a labor of love! I am so proud of your efforts! A friend, Susan

Wow ~ what a brave little girl you are! I don't even know you personally and I am very proud of you for everything that you have done here on your site.

I have a 9 yr old son, Dominick, who has Pseudo tumor of the brain and is also a patient of Dr David Frim. He had his VP Shunt placed in June of 2002 and hasn't had any real problems. The last six weeks we have been experiencing some problems and are again back at the University of Chicago to visit Dr. Frim.

This has been a hard thing for my husband and I to comprehend at times. We didn't realize all the information ~ it helps now that we have internet service. I look forward to popping back in.

I read that you had a revision done and we pray that you are doing well. Wishing you a speedy recovery!!

Hi Baylie,

This is a note for you and your Mom. A week + after my shunt revision in Nov 06, I started getting adbmoninal pain too. I went through a battle of tests, one extra surgery and then ended up on pain meds, till 8 months after my family doctor figured it was nerve type related pain due to have so many surgeries. The pain is underneath my right ribs, along near where my shunt is. It's called Complex Pain Syndrome (Reflex Sympthedic Dysthropy)if worst comes to worst searching it out.

I really hope though for Baylie and everyone's sake, that it goes away!!! Though you can always contact me if you need more information.

Baylie...we will be praying that Dr Frim can re-set you real quick. Sam always has a lot of problems getting her valve reset. Once it reset itself?!?! Then they have to take about 20 x-rays because her valve is all twisted around. We hope you feel better soon and get back to school....

Greetings Baylie from Snowy Alaska! Hope you are feeling better and are still recovering quickly our "Super Girl"! This weekend is Easter - we still need to color our Easter Eggs. We can't tell if we will do our Easter Egg hunt in the snow or not, the weather cannot make up it's mind. Have you ever Easter Egg hunted in the snow before? It sure makes it challenging to find the eggs. Take care sweetie,

Dear Baylie, What a strong and powerful young lady you are. I can only imagine what you are going through. I know you will feel better once your surgery is over. I know the loss of your special nurse makes you sad, but I also know that your doctor will find someone special to replace her. And that person is someone you will be able to trust too. Your doctor cares too much about you not to get someone good and special for you.

Hi Baylie! I'm sorry that you have to have surgery to fix your shunt, but I'm glad that Dr. frim figured out what was causing you to feel so bad. I know that surgery is NOT fun, but after you are home and feeling well you will be able to do so much more and be more 'normal' again. Baylie I think you are an amazing girl. Even though you have chiari and hate it, you have stepped up to raise money for research and instead of just being worried about yourself you are always worried about your friends too! You are one special girl, not many girls your age would do what you have. I'm praying for you and I know you will be just fine when the surgery time comes because God is with you and is watching over you! Here's a big cyber hug!

Baylie,
I'm so sorry that you have to have your shunt fixed! I know that is scary and frustrating!!! The bright spot to it, is that you at least have the WONDERFUL Dr. Frim to do it. We are not all that lucky! But still, it is a big surgery and I'm so sorry. Maybe I'll be able to come up and see you if you are feeling up to it! It would be nice to meet you!

Oh, I hate ERs too! I always get the migraine paper too. I'm like this is SO not a migraine! Last time I was 7 days post op and had to wait in the waiting room for 2 1/2 hours before they took me back. That was the longest I had been out of bed since my surgery -- needless to say I was miserable by then. They took a kid needing a drug test before me! Oi, they just don't get it. Then I had to show the nurse how my shunt tubing ran from where to where. Now that is scary! They do need some more education on these conditions.

You'll ALL be in my thoughts and prayers! I'm hoping and praying that this will be what makes a huge difference for how Baylie feels! Here's to feeling "normal" again!

Baylie,
know that you are loved and a VERY special girl. I know it's hard to understand why things in your life happen like they do, like your illness, but if it wasn't for you, Chiari wouldn't be on the research path it is with all you have done to raise money for a cure. You have started something around the world and a great thing for others that have Chiari. Keep your head up high and remember that you are VERY VERY LOVED!!!!!!!!!!

Greetings Baylie from foggy Alaska. I am sorry to hear that you have to have another surgery. While surgery can be scary, try to focus on the end result - you will feel better! I've had two surgeries on both knees, the most recent one being the day after Christmas. I think sometimes when you know what to expect, it can make the surgery less desirable. You are a brave little girl and are loved by so many people. You are like a angel on earth and have done so much good for mankind. We love you and will be thinking about you on the day of your surgery. PS. My grandma turns 91 next week. She lives in Washington State with my parents on their 100 ft. tugboat. Can you imagine what it would be like and how much you have seen in 91 years!! xoxo Debbie K.

Hi Baylie...My daughter has an LA shunt, even more rare than the LP. Luckily for us, our hospital does a ton of shunts, but they even look at us crazy when we say LA. We saw Dr Frim for a second opinion about 4 years ago, we live in Detroit but took the train to Chicago. We thought he was great. Take care and I hope your headaches go away soon. Sam has them every day too and they're not migraines...ARGH..

I had an x-ray tech tell me there was something very wrong and was all upset because he couldn't find the tubing in my brain either! He wouldn't believe Mom and I that I didn't have a VP shunt and had to call the doctor. I laugh about it now but at the time it sure was frustrating! I'm praying for you guys!

Hugs,
Cristina

Hi Baylie,
My daughter went to a bracelet making party last night in Indianapolis to help your campaign. I had her purchase 5 of the bracelets for me. She thinks there might be another party in the future and I'm sure I will get more then also. You are an inspiration to so many! I will keep you in my prayers. God bless you and your family.

Hi Baylie,
My name is Avery. I am 6 yrs old and also have chiari. Dr. Frim is my doctor too! He did my decompression surgery on December 5th 2007. I am sorry to hear that you are not feeling great right now. I hope Dr. Frim can make you feel better real soon. My mom talked to your mom and told her that my sister and I would like to help you out by making some bracelets. Let me know if there is anything special you want us to put on the bracelets...we know you like blue beads. My mom is going to take us shopping to get the beads and we will get working on them real soon.
We ordered a tshirt and I am going to send you a picture of me in it real soon. Good luck next week, we will be thinking of you!

I was diganised with chiari malformation in December,2006 I had 1st surgert December 28,2006. I had to have 2nd surgery May,2007 due to spinalfluid leaking at the suter. I have stuggled allmy life and finally found a doctor that took me seriously and found the problem. I am somewhat better but I still stuggle each day with syptoms. I was very happy to see that someone is trying to get the word out about this condition. I want to get something started in my local area just not sure where to start.

Hi Baylie, I can't tell you how proud I'm of you for all you do to help your friends, despite your pain and daily struggles. I have ordered a shirt resently and will wear it proudly, being that I have had at least 10 brain surgeries for Hydrocephalus. Baylie I know on a daily basic what pain is like too: I have Spina Bifida, Hydrocephalus, Slit Ventricle Syndrome, Arnold Chiari and chronic pain. I don't know of any other 8, almost 9 yr old that thinks about others before themselves, raising so much money, that you don't even realize how much it is making a difference even if your friends and you are still in pain. I know that life isn't fair, but somehow we have to find it in ourselve to keep fighting the courageous fight put in front of us.

You are amazing Baylie and I hope that you have a wonderful birthday, even if you have such bad pain. I was in the hospital for my last birthday having had brain surgery for my shunt and to put in a gravity valuve for my svs.

Baylie! I have been looking at all the wonderful things you have done to help get what a Chiari Malformation is to the public! You have been through alot and I am there with you all the way! When I was little I always felt very dizzy when i would lie down on my back, all the doctors thought i was crazy, but I persisted and found out that I also had a Chiari. I hope you know that you are a very brave girl to be going through all the pain you must have, and I lend you my strength. Stay Strong Baylie, things will get better.

Remembering the rest of the family is really needed. I missed much of my son's summer after high school and sending him off to college because Cristina was in the hospital in Chicago. I thought I was going to miss him again, but got lucky. Cristina went into an adrenal crisis wednesday after getting a little stomach virus. Cristina was discharged today so I will be able to take him to the airport tomorrow morning. I thought I was going to miss that again.....He would not have appreciatesd it at all either.
The good part was that he got to see how sick she gets and maybe will understand a little more why he had to be shortchanged some of the time. Needing 3 men to carry his baby sister to the car since she had no control of her arms or legs opened his eyes a little.
I hope all the girls hve a good weekend.

Thank you so much for stopping by and signing my guestbook. Sorry to hear that Baylie isn't feeling that well. It really does seem to be a rough month for all of us. Not sure why, since it's not hot, lol, but the weather keeps changing, so maybe that's it.
I'm hoping you all have a wonderful and healthy year!
Kathy
