A New Year’s Prayer

May God make your year a happy one!
Not by shielding you from all sorrows and pain,
But by strengthening you to bear it, as it comes;
Not by making your path easy,
But by making you sturdy to travel any path;
Not by taking hardships from you,
But by taking fear from your heart;
Not by granting you unbroken sunshine,
But by keeping your face bright, even in the shadows;
Not by making your life always pleasant,
But by showing you when people and their causes need you most,
and by making you anxious to be there to help.
God’s love, peace, hope and joy to you for the year ahead.

Happy New Year!

God Bless!

Hi there!

Lisa Lowrey, Kambryn's mom, and I have set up a Vanderbilt Children's Hemonc Forum for our families, past and present, to get together and chat. Our hope is that we can have a place for families going through active treatment to get to know each other... families whose kids are done with treatment can talk about what's next and families with angels to connect for friendship and support. We also hope to start raising awareness for Childhood Cancer here in Middle Tennessee as well as help the families going through active treatment. Basically this is one solid place to connect and hopefully help find a cure for this horrible cancer that has drawn our families together. Check it out and let us know what you think. If you have any ideas or questions we would love to hear them! Also, please feel free to pass this info along to other Vanderbilt families... I know I have missed several, so the more we get the word out the better the forum will be! We hope to see you over there!

Everyone who has a child with cancer I need your help. Can you please type up a brief, one page paper telling your Childs story and how the diagnoses changed the life of the whole family.

Through a friend of a friend I am going to print each and every story and they will be hand delivered to Oprahs producer in the hopes of getting her to do a show on Childhood Cancer.

People need to know what us parents go through trying to get medications approved and treatments through the insurance company.

How sick our kids are, what one child with cancer does to the whole family, what the siblings have to go through along with what it does emotionally and financially to the family. The side effects our children have to live with the rest of their lives, the secondary cancers some of the kids will get, with no where to turn.

We are now dealing with the horrible side effects of radiation with no relief in sight for my daughter who was treated for EWING'S SARCOMA (bone cancer), but no one cares what happens to our children except the handful of others who are going down the same road as we are.

So please write your story and E-mail it to me at gonikki501@yahoo.com if you can please send a picture of before and after diagnoses if there's space on the page.

Thank you all and hopefully this will be the beginning of Gold ribbons everywhere. Please pass this on to who ever would like to participate. Please have your story in by Oct.19th.

THE GOLD RUSH!

Dear Josh,
I read about you on my friend Luke Charton's Caringbridge page. He finishes his treatment today and I hope it was successful.
You, like Luke are a warrior and a hero to all who are fighting this terrible disease. Great job raising money for alex's lemonade stand.
My wish for you is a full and happy life, may you live to be 100 or more, because you deserve it after all you have been through.

I will keep you in my prayers, and may the grace of God protect you and your family.

Great to meet you,

Miss Sandy

Hi,

I am the Dad of AJ, a 14 year old cancer victim. I wanted to make you aware (maybe again) and enlist your help for the Cure Childhood Cancer petition! The GREAT news is that CureSearch, LIVESTRONG and Alex’s Lemonade Stands have ALL written about the Petition on their websites! And TX Children’s and DUKE have both allowed us to setup paper versions inside the hospitals! WE ARE MAKING HEADWAY and are at over 11,000 signatures! But we need your help again. If you can please make your readers aware, email it around again, and give just a little publicity, I think we can make this happen!

Thanks again,
AJs Dad

Hi Josh, it's been a long time since I have been in touch. I have had a busy time with my husband's illness (heart problems) for 3 1/2 years. Your wonderful grandmother sent me a picture of you yesterday and I think you look wonderful. You have grown into such a "hunk". I can't believe you are ready to get your driver's license. It made me feel so good knowing that you still have "Wayne's cup". We always called it the magic cup because it helped him swallow pills too. I am very proud of you for all the charitable work you do in regards to children's cancer..WHAT A WORTHY CAUSE. Keep up the good work. Love, Carol Dayberry

Hi Josh & Family, So glad you are doing well. They had the St. Baldrich's thing at Central Park in Ny also. My grandson was diagnosed in July and we did the protocol, then decided to go to MSKCC in NY to do the 3f8 antibody. They had it there while we were there, our grandson is bald but several from the RMH went and did what you did. You are a hero. We pray for all to be great until your scans next year. Josh,
My name is Kristie Foust and I am pretty sure that I had you in daycare at Grace Baptist Afterschool Program. I had cancer while I worked there. Shortly after, you were diagnosed with cancer. I brought you a gift bag with some things to do with and an Atlanta hat. I don't know if you remember at all, but it is great to see you are doing so well. I have wondered about you many times over the year. I read about you from Savannah France's caringbridge page. I am so glad things are good and to see all the work you are doing to help others.

Thank you for visiting Lucas' website. It's encouraging to read success stories as yours. Lucas was diagnosed at 9 months old and we were told that he would have a 90% chance of event-free survival and at 2 years out, he would be considered "cured". Lucas fell in that small percentage and progressed. It's been nearly 3 years and we're battling the same beast. Some days are grim, at best, but to read stories such as yours gives us hope. I look forward to days when Lucas can ATV and do all the things normal teenage boys do. Happy belated birthday Josh. I look forward to reading about many more birthdays and road trips...that you'll be able to drive.

They don't call Tennessee "The Volunteer State" for nothing. It is people like you who epitomize the slogan. My dad and his family lived in Knoxville while they were growing up and Dad graduated from UTK as did I! There is nothing like BIG ORANGE ~ unless it is your lemonade. I think you are terrific to give so much of your self to help fund such a wonderful cause. I certainly hope the day will come soon when a total cure for Cancer will be found. We are getting there, now (you are a good example of this) but more is needed. Thank you for a job well done and for being such an inspiration.

Dear Friends in the Faith,
I just read your posting on Jonathan's guestbook and clicked to your site. I'm so proud of you for continuing the fight. In a one year span, my little Serenity was able to come home for 9 days to enjoy the life a little girl should live. On the night before returning to the hospital for her second/third transplant I sat up a lemonaid stand in the driveway for her. She made 16 dollars in about an hour. To help with the transition of being back in... our first day I sat the stand up outside of her room...I always called it our porch...She brought in another hefty chunk of change. It gave my little two year old so much satisfaction. We called it a Cup For a Cause... Until your guestbook entry I was not familiar with Alex's Lemonaid Stand. What a beautiful idea and so much fun it brought to Serenity.

Unfortunately, Serenity lost her courageous fight, but her spirit will continue to live in all of us she touched so tenderly with her laughter, her heart, her humor, and her love.

I applaud your strength and determination. What a wonderful family you must have.

Butterfly Kisses,

Josh you're a Fighter, a Survivor an Inspiration.
Granddad & I were real proud of you and Brittany
for working so hard at your Alex's Lemonada Stand.
It sure was a good hot day for lemonade. Didn't it
just touch your heart when folks would say they look
over at Inges as they were going by to see if you had
your stand up.
Even folks that didn't even get to come by your stand
that day made a point to give you some money for ALAF.
Some of my e-mail buddy's reach out also to help.
G.dad's breakfast friends, our family & church friends
& friends. We couldn't have reach this goal & over with

It was "Josh Powell Day "your day, and what a
wonderful way You use it. Trying to help find a cure
for childhood cancer one cup at a time.
Also for helping Ronald McDonald house with their
Tabs & cans. We know there will always sick children.
You will never forget RMH I know. Keep up the good
work.
God has a plan for you and he is letting you use it
in doing a good deed. Enjoy your summer, In just a

will love it.Many new friends to meet.

I loved it how Josh West (wbir) edit your story.
He started and ended with your poem.

"I survived Neuroblastoma"
I survived it all, it's all behind me
It's out of my mind
Hopefully it won't come back and find me.

Life without cancer is as great as it can be
I can only thank my good Lord for watching over me.

Now that I am done, I am happy as can be
I want to thank the doctors and nurses that
took good care me.

I thank God for the miracle he's done
I thank him daily when the day is done.

How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator?
You open the door, put in the giraffe, and shut the door.
How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator?
You open the door, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant, and shut the door.
The lion king holds a party for all the animals of the world, and all attend except for one. Which one did not attend?
The elephant. He was stuck in the fridge!
You have to get across a river that is inhabited by crocodiles. How do you get across?
You swim. The crocodiles are at the animal party! ;)

WOW Josh, you did a great job telling your story on the RMH Telethon sat.night and getting the tabs to the recycling center.Although we could never praise RMH enough since you spent seven months in the houses while in treatments, but we can show them our love & how thankful we are that we had a place like RMH to stay by doing the tabs & cans for them.
Keep up the good work.Always remember it's better to give than recieve. This will be your project in a few more years.

Hi again Josh! Just talked to your grandmom Lou- she is a wondrful woman. You seem to have a great family and many friends that are supporting you. That in itself is a gift. I saw the articles about your fundraisers and I am enlightened by your determination and dedication. More people in this world should be like you. You are one-in-a-million!!! I just wanted to say that we (the owners) of Afleet Alex are being given a special Eclipse Award recognizing our participation with the Alex's Lemonade Stand and pediatric cancer. It has been my honor to help spread the word about special kids like you and get others to fund your search for the cure. This will be the best award that I could ever receive.

I am proud of you- I can only imagine how your family feels...I was in Kentucky last weekend and saw Alex for the first time since September. He gave me a nip for you!!!

When I get my pictures downloaded- I will send one to you!

God bless and keep on doing what you do- so well!!!

Hey Josh (and family) I just stumbled acrossed your website and wanted to let you know that my son Jonathan was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma back on March 26, 1999. Jonathan was six years old at the time, old because most children are diagnosed as infants. He underwent almost a year of chemotherapy, radiation and resection of the tumor. All of his treatment was done under Dr. Stephen Grupp, MD PhD at Children's Hospital, Philadelphia, PA. Jonathan just celebrated his 13th birthday on July 26th. He will be entering 8th grade in September. We go once a year to CHOP for visits to Oncology and Endocrinology so that they can check his progress. So far the only problems he is having as a result of the treatment is a slight hearing loss and he is a little on the short side. He has problems with certain foods not agreeing with his digestive system, but otherwise he seems to be fine. I hope your recovery is goiong well and remember to maintain a great attitude and always find time to laugh and smile. Laughter is the best medicine !!!!

Dear Josh, "Happy 13th Birthday" The devotional from
Upper Room for June 10/2005....it seem it was written
just for you. I do think God speaks to us through
writers like this.
"Stay on the Path" By leaning on Christ and taking
him at his word, you receive comfort during your
time of struggle so you can become a source of hope
and encourgement to others who are going through
similar experiences.
God uses the valleys of your life to strenghen your
faith so you can help others through difficult times.
He has a plan for you. There will be many mountain tops,
but don't forget to stay on the path & I hope & pray
that God will always be # one in your life.

It was a grand day today, Out to eat @Conner's with
good cup cakes & ice cream afterward at your house.
WOW...what a birthday present !!! Revo RC Nitro truck.
Godspeed, drive it safe in the fields.

We are asking again that our prayers will be answer
that you will have clean scans & test wed. & thurs.
this week.

Happy 13th Birthday. We are looking forward to you
being a teenage. Love U,Granddad & grandmother
