Thursday, June 25, 2009 6:20 PM EST So......John decided that things were way too quiet around here. As we posted before, John spent a few days in St. Joseph's hospital because of a port infection and a picc line was put in. We thought we were good to go for awhile...but NO...not when John is involved. On Monday I got a call from John that his picc line was not giving any blood, and his arm was really hurting. I called Georgetown and was told that he needed to go to the ER at St. Joseph's. Albert, the good soul that he is, left work and took John to the ER. John's picc line had pushed it's self out 3 inches. They took him to radiology and put in a new one, however, they used the same arm and vein. Come Wednesday morning John was complaining that his arm really hurt and was swollen. Later that morning after he started running his fluid bolus, his arm really swelled up. It appeared the fluid was going into his tissues. He stopped the bolus and we once again called Georgetown. It was decided that the picc line was not going to work for John and that we needed to bring him down to Georgetown and they would put in a central line. John and I left at 4:45 AM this morning and arrived back home at 4:30PM. Everything went well today and John kept them all on their toes, even with maximum sedation, he was awake and talking through the entire procedure. Of course all that sedation caught up with him on the ride home and he got some much needed sleep.
On to other things. John has been doing well enough eating and drinking that Georgetown has started the process of weaning him off of the TPN. John's weight is also up to 123lbs...a big difference from our all time low of 78 lbs last year.
You can help John with his medical expenses by making a donation to the "John Maicher Recovery Fund" at Sovereign Bank, 15 Maplewood Drive, Douglassville, PA. 19518. Thank you.
