Journal

It looks as if Spring has FINALLY "sprung" around here. Thank goodness. The dreary, grey days of Ohio's winter were getting really old. We are looking forward to sunshine, warmer temperatures, fresh air, and the ability to partake in outdoor activities.

Speaking of winter, we had a fairly decent winter. The holidays went well. They were obviously difficult, but we made it through with the help of God, family, and friends.

We kept busy during the winter months with Peyton's first year of competitive, boys gymnastics. The season went well. The team did very well overall, wining the team title at several of the meets. Peyton placed well in a few events during the season, despite being the youngest, smallest, and least experienced member of the team. We even traveled out of town for three of the five weekend meets, so this kept us fairly occupied. Peyton continues with gymnastics practice year-round, but they only compete during the winter months.

Peyton is now back into spring soccer. With a soccer practice, a soccer game, and two gymnastics practice sessions each week, we are pretty busy. Then, just as soccer comes to an end, the baseball season will begin.

It is hard to believe, but Peyton is nearly done with first grade! He has had a GREAT year despite the obvious hardship he has had to overcome. Everyone from his teacher, his classmates, and his school staff have gone out of their way to make sure he is adjusting well and staying on track. His reading, vocabulary, and math skills are all well above average, and he seems to have an enourmous interest in science. All-in-all, Peyton is doing very well.

Our school district is growing at a very fast rate, and as a result, there has been some "redistricting" going on. Our neigborhood has been affected, and Peyton is scheduled to switch schools this fall. We are concerned since very few of his classmates and friends at his current school were affected by the change. With this fall being the one year anniversary of Austin's death, we want Peyton to be around some familiar classmates, friends, teachers, and school staff (especially the school counselor). We will be seeking district approval for him to remain at his current school due to everything that has happened in our lives. This is an important upcomig decision for us.

Suzanne returned to work full-time in the late fall. She has been very busy as the company she works for has been growing in size and expanding in scope.

I have been very busy at work with my unit deployed overseas. I am also scheduled to attend a military school during the entire month of May, so Suzanne will be "holding down the fort" by herself for awhile.

We don't have much planned for summer...at least not yet! Peyton will head to northern California for 2-3 weeks in late June/early July after school is out. He will be visiting Suzanne's sister's family, including his only two cousins. We did make a tough decision to cancel the memorial golf outing we were beginning to plan for August. We just did not feel that we had the necessary energy to take on such an emotionally charged event so relatively soon after Austin's death. Maybe next year...

It's hard to believe that it has already been six months since Austin passed away. We all think of him many, many times a day, and visit his room both morning and night to "talk" to him and look at the many photographs on display. We visit the cemetary fairly often, especially on holidays or significant events (i.e. birthdays, etc).

We feel that we are healing well, and are all doing better than expected. We are sure there are many bumps in the road still ahead, but we are confident that we will be able to handle them. We thank all of you for the years of love, friendship, support, and prayers.

To Austin we say "we love you more than ever, and we miss you beyond all comprehension!"

Love,

Kevin, Suzanne, Peyton, and }A{
