Day +1,826
5 YEARS POST-TRANSPLANT!!

Welcome to my Web site. On February 27, 2004, I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia with the Philadelphia Chromosome. I received three blocks of chemotherapy in Greenville, N.C. before coming to Duke for a stem cell transplant on June 30, 2004 (my 14th birthday). I would love to hear from family and friends, so please drop me a note as often as possible

Day 1826. Well, today is the special day. I am 19 years old today and am cancer free! Looking back over the past five years, I am very blessed to have made it to this point with only minor complications, especially compared to what all my transplant friends have had to endure. I could not have made it this far without my family, friends, many doctors and nurses, and especially God. In the past, I have had to pass a huge bump in the road (and a few small ones), but God has allowed medicine, many doctors’ talents, and my family’s choices to work together for the best.

I had my five year checkup at Duke a couple of weeks ago. The results of the echocardiogram, bone density, and pulmonary function tests, as well as all blood work are in the normal range. I had a new nurse practitioner this time, Andre, and it turns out that he was one of my nurses on 5200 five years ago. I haven’t seen Andre since then, so it was pretty ironic and interesting to catch up…I also had my endocrinology checkup about a week ago. My levels were a little bit too low, so my thyroid had been working harder than normal for a while now. As a result, the doctor changed the dosage of my medicine, and I will have another blood draw in a few months to have the levels checked again.

My summer has been wonderful so far. The three weeks of summer school were pretty intense; classes were every day for three hours, but it was well worth the A I received. I got pretty good at driving in 8:00 Raleigh traffic to make it to class in time, and I loved being able to take care of a nine week class in only three weeks. Now, other than getting my wisdom teeth taken out in July, I can relax for the rest of the summer!

I hope everyone else is also having a great summer. I will post some birthday/5 year post-transplant pictures when I get a chance.

In Christ,
Meredith
