Sunday, June 21, 2009 9:55 PM CDT Jerry completed his mortal journey on Friday, June 19, 2009, at 1:40 p.m. after struggling for several days to breathe. He fought bravely for 4 years and 7 months against gbm. Below is his obituary. Thanks to all who encouraged him in the battle. He is at peace.
Sandra Jarrell
Woodrow Wilson “Jerry” Jarrell, Jr., 68, joined the Choir Eternal on June 19, 2009, following a courageous four-and-˝-year battle with brain cancer (glioblastoma multiforme). He was born in Americus, GA, on January 9, 1941, son of the late Woodrow Wilson, Sr., and Frances Brooks Jarrell. He graduated from Butler (GA) High School, attended Emory College at Oxford, GA, and graduated from Georgia Tech with honors, where he was president of the Baptist Student Union. He received a Master of Church Music and Religious Education degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, and a certificate in Clinical Pastoral Education from Spartanburg General Hospital in SC. He served churches in Virginia and Kentucky before becoming Minister of Music and Youth at First Baptist Church of Gaffney, SC, in 1968. In 1978 he was called as Associate Pastor of Music and Religious Education at Mars Hill Baptist Church in Mars Hill, NC, where he served for 28 years. Jerry was Associational Music Director for the French Broad Association for several years and served on the founding boards of Neighbors in Need of Madison County and the Advent Spirituality Center. He received several awards, including a Governor’s Volunteer Award for Madison County in 1992. Following his retirement in 2006, he volunteered regularly at the Mars Hill Retirement Center and briefly served as a hospice volunteer. He was an avid photographer and reader, and enjoyed hiking and traveling. Jerry is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sandra Whitener Jarrell; daughters, Emily Jarrell Urbanek and husband Aaron of Charlotte, NC, and Holly Jarrell Marcinelli and husband Michael of North Andover, MA; son, Andrew Brooks Jarrell and wife Megan of Cary, NC; grandson, Brooks Archer Jarrell; brother, Talmadge Dewitt Jarrell of Warwick, GA; aunt, Myra B. Campbell of Vienna, GA; five nieces and nephews and many cousins. A memorial service will be held at Mars Hill Baptist Church at 2:00pm on Monday, June 22, Rev. Tommy Justus and Rev. Sharon Updike officiating. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday , June 23, at 11:00am at Mars Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Dr. Don Jackson of Cancer Centers of North Carolina, the staff of the Mission Hospital Outpatient Infusion Center, CarePartners Health Services, Hospice of Madison County and the doctors and staff of the Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke for all their care. They also thank the Mars Hill Baptist Church family and staff, and friends and neighbors who supported them through Jerry’s long journey.
